Actually the point of haranguing fellow NATO members about their defense spending was to undermine the unity of NATO and weaken it, at Putin’s bidding. NATO has stopped the USSR/Russia dead in its tracks for 70 years. A Russian agent in the White House wants to weaken it. I wonder why.
Yes I understand the spin that has been applied to Trump’s demand just fine. If Trump wanted to weaken NATO, he’d pull out. He hasn’t unfortunately. There are some real strong delusions going on about weakening an alliance by giving it more firepower. How ridiculous has the anti-Trump position stooped when it claims that Putin is demanding more funding to NATO. Just does not make sense in any form or fashion.
I guess he also believes that adding countries to NATO also weakens NATO along with backing members like Turkey.

I am musing that Putins strategy of splitting up NATO could backfire badly and end up with a far stronger military power on his doorstep rather than in the western hemisphere.
The UK, who was always the primary opponent to an EU military is leaving, and Putin has made it very clear that a strong military is necessary. And the entire eastern Europe part of the EU is frightened of Russias military.
Long-term this is not necessarily a win for Russia.
