Roger Waters is a tankie

Yeah, they would never say it’s his last ever. Even Elton has waffled during his “last” tour this year.

I gotta say though, I took my wife to one of his farewell concerts last month. It was awesome.

He gave a nice speech about thanking everyone for their support over the years and how much he has loved performing for people, but he wants to spend time with his family now.

Dude can still perform though. Damn. He sounded as good as ever.

This is a joke, right? Please tell me this is a joke.

“First ever farewell tour” is some Spinal Tap nonsense.

Hear, hear!

but the rest of album can be used to line a pig trough as far as I’m concerned.

Eh…gonna have call it a hard disagree here. Perhaps I am biased because I “discovered” Pink Floyd for myself through The Final Cut whilst deployed to Iraq. It really “spoke” to me. And it continued to do so as my next assignment was to the Naval Academy, where at times I was expected to “teach.” The little ingrates… tried to whip them into shape, but I had to take care not to let the shield slip. Had to hide, hide, hide behind paranoid eyes. But what happened to the post-war dream??.

Anyway, it was only by degrees, and largely in reverse, that I came to appreciate their earlier works. I think I ended on Atom Heart Mother. Don’t much care for anything older.

Wow.
Reminds me of a friend who’s first Stones tune he heard was “Undercover of the Night”.

It really is entirely a matter of personal taste. David Gilmore is a fine vocalist and a brilliant axman, but when it comes to overall musical composition, he lacks Waters’ edge and skill. Waters is (or at least was) a broadly talented musical genius, but if you find his rough voice or brushstrokes of anguish difficult to listen to, you might as well skip everything he has done after The Wall (I cannot tolerate opera, so I will never know whether or not Ça Ira is great).

Waters’ work is like a jalfreizie, Gilmour’s is like angel food cake, it is up to you what you like, what you are in the mood for.

I didn’t find either hard to listen to when combined with the musical brilliance of the other members. I can’t think of a track that relies on all of them combined, except maybe In The Flesh?, but there are plenty that just wouldn’t be the same without the unique style of a couple of them combined. The Final Cut, however, is when he started to become self-indulgent to the point of imbalance, and what I’ve heard from his solo stuff wasn’t better (and furthermore did not feature the rest of the band).

And that was before his tankitude became apparent. I’ve relistened to Pink Floyd lately and it just doesn’t feel the same knowing the character behind the voice. Just yesterday I listened to Have A Cigar and wondered what Roy Harper was doing these days. His voice, at least as it appeared on the album, would sound perfect for those songs that need to sound ragged like Roger.

I once thought Pink Floyd was a character created by David Bowie for his album Iggy Pop Stardust and the Pink Floyd Spiders From Mars (I thought Iggy Pop was another one). As you can imagine, I did NOT tend to haunt the rock aisles at the Licorice Pizza. What I’m trying to convey is that I really have no frame of reference for evaluating a comparative analysis of the music of Roger Waters and David Gilmour.

That said, TIL that jalfreizie is a spicy curry dish considered to have its roots in Bengali culinary traditions.

I’m already familiar with Angel food cake.

You need to get out more. Indian/subcontinent food is awesome.

Oh man do I love curry. :yum:

My eyesight might be going if I’m always misreading that as “Roger Waters is a Twinkie”.

I don’t get it.

“If you miss this first farewell tour, remember that next year I’ll be touring with THE WALL FAREWELL TOUR. In '24 I’ll be gearing up for my second farewell tour which starts Dec 31st and continuing for ten consecutive nights at London O2 arena, before heading to…”

It’s our 4th annual going out of business sale!

Yeah, I was listening to The Wall the other day, I’d always imagined that later section to be a parody or condemnation of fascism, but now I wonder…

English-language translation of an interview with Waters in the Berliner Zeitung that ran last week. I’ve never heard of the Duran that he speaks of before (and it’s tricky to google without turning up a lot of results for the band Duran Duran) but mediabiasfactcheck rates it “a Questionable source based on far-right-wing bias, promotion of Russian propaganda, right-wing conspiracies, a lack of transparency, use of poor sources, plagiarism, and failed fact checks.”

he seems of age and/or the mental structure, where …

you don’t believe what you see, but you only see what you believe

sad state of affairs … for me, this takes quite a bit of fun out of listening to his ouvre

Just don’t try to search for an article about Duran Duran in the media source Duran. Very difficult.

Heh, this is pretty rich and delusional since Putin started this particular war.

Yeahhh, how does your dumb ass plan to make Putin do that and make it stick, Roger? Don’t get your politics straight from the mouths of musicians, kids. I’m a (part-time) musician, and we’re an notoriously unreliable bunch on this front.

Heh, and if you want it to be worse than it already is, he’s got you covered. On his re-recording of DSOTM

and

So it sounds like he understands why his music succeeded about as much as he understands geopolitics.
