www.nationalmortgagenews, www.allnurses.com… Any more? www.catholic-tastes? (I’m intrigued)
I’ve had a few posts at the discussion board which goes with NPR’s Science Friday (one of my favorite programs). I am especially proud of my Science YMCA idea.
A couple of years ago I found a paranormal/orientated website called The Shadowlands. However, I was banned after I suggested that demonic posession might account for some (or even all) paranormal activity and even some mental illness. I argued that just because a drug is able to decrease the pathological behavior doesn’t necessarily imply that it couldn’t have a spiritual basis. This perspective (which I consider one of many possible explanations for the paranormal, including that the “paranormal” doesn’t even exist at all) was over the top for what was essentially a “new age” perspective, type place.
I have also had a few posts at www.swingersboard.com under the screen name of Mulder. Also a few posts via Google Groups at various science orientated forums especially having to do with Non Small Cell Lung Cancer and the work of Dr. Judah Folkman, and his work on angiostatin and endostatin (I lamented that the FDA makes it all but impossible to test two investigational agents in clinical trials at once in the same trial and that these agents may rely upon synergy in order to be effective).
I’m still looking for the Tower.
Roland, I enjoy your posts. Fuck everybody else.
Hold on a minute. I enjoy them too. I just think that there are a few too many at the same time.
Let’s not get all “Pit”. This may well be the first polite pit thread ever. If we ignore your last post, that is…
Bah.
Roland, this thread is not a personal thing against you, really.
It’s just that unfortunately a very familiar behavior pattern we’ve seen over the years runs as follows:
- Newbie registers.
- Newbie goes hog-wild first week of registration, excitedly starts threads all OVER the place.
- Newbie is told by Admins, “Yo, slow it down a bit.”
Then one of two things happens:
- Newbie responds furiously with a spectacular and usually painfully ungrammatical and misspelled, Pit flameout. “Oh, yah, well, FUCK YOU and your little dog, too, straight dope message board, I’m LEAVING and I’m never coming back, fuck you fuck you fuck you” etc.
Or:
- Newbie responds furiously with a spectacular and usually painfully ungrammatical and misspelled, Pit flameout. “Oh, yah, well, FUCK YOU and your little dog, too, straight dope message board, I’m LEAVING and I’m never coming back, fuck you fuck you fuck you” etc. And adds the information that he is:
Variation A: A banned poster returning under another name, “nyah nyah fooled YOU dint I, you fucking SDMB”,
Or:
Variation B: A high school kid just putzing around during computer class, “nyah nyah, I don’t NEED your fucking message board, I wuz just jerking your chain, I’m OUTTA here…”
Either way, it’s tedious.
Rare indeed is the Newbie who responds to a request to “slow it down a bit” with a courteous “Oops, sorry”.
So, I hope you can see how the assumption, upon seeing a Newbie enthusiastically romping all over the boards, tends to be that a spectacular, albeit tedious and repetitious, Pit flameout is imminent. Nobody’s picking on you personally, it’s just that some of us have a lower tolerance for that particular form of tension.
So.
Just do like your mother said and “be yourself”, and eventually you’ll find a place to fit in.
Yah know, Achilles, you may be right. My heartfelt apologies for cussing in the most polite pit thread ever. I just hate pile-ons, I personally didn’t think he had done anything wrong, and wanted to defend him a bit.
Cheers
Actually, Shakespeare’s Polonius said that, and he was a senile old man.
So, here’s what been accomplished with this PIT thread. Roland has added 3 more to his post count. :smack:
ltfire, yeah, but at least he’s finally posting in a thread he didn’t start. That’s progress.
Also, anyone who has read my threads will realize that I have in fact posted to threads I didn’t start on several occassion (granted I’ve started many more). Furthermore, my topics run a broad gamit ranging from door jamb protection invention ideas to questions about cosmic inflation/redshift, nanotechnology, and yes sex.
Even if I fit the profile described above of a newbie who posts like a madman only to vanish into the night, so what? Different people will no doubt to use this forum in manners suited to their unique personalities and needs. So long as they are not engaging in abusive, obscene or otherwise profoundly disruptive behavior, I fail to see why it’s a problem. Furthermore, if you review my post count at www.allnurses.com you will see that I have accumulated about 500 posts in over two years (screen name Roland). There are many people here who have acquired thousands of posts over the same time period present in this venue.
Roland
Are you the Headless Thompson Gunner?
Eleusis - that’s not a problem at all. I understand where you are coming from too. I really don’t like pile-ons (or pylons - but that’s a whole other bunch a knickers). As I said before, Mr. Deschain hasn’t really offended anyone, so I was just wondering about the inanity of some of the queries - that and their sheer volume.
FWIW, I don’t think Roland has answered my queries regarding his obsession about evading law-enforcement officers and generally “getting away with it”…
I wait with bated breath…
Well, see, the thing is, many of us get involved with people here. Maybe not “emotionally” involved, but we’re–interested–in them, is maybe the best way of putting it. And sometimes we spend time looking stuff up on Google to answer their General Question, and sometimes we get involved in lengthy, passionate Great Debates with them, and sometimes we mourn with them, or celebrate with them, in MPSIMS, and sometimes we high-five them as they celebrate an excellent boss put-down in the Pit.
There’s a camaraderie here, even with people that are only pixels on an Internet message board.
So it comes as a nasty shock to find, say, that that nice nursing student who posted all about his wife’s sexual frigidity is really a banned poster returning under another name, or a high school nerd who was just jerking our chain. We feel like we’ve got something invested here, and it’s ugly to find that it was all a waste, and worse, that the person in whom we invested is laughing at us for being gullible.
really get on my tits.
Roland - there’s actually a good reason for conforming to (what you describe as) the social mores of a message board; the more people that read your post without wanting to rip out your kidneys and sell them for pet food, the more useful replies you’re likely to get and the better the general aura of calm and understanding is fostered.
I hear ya. HE’S STILL FUCKING DOING IT !!!
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH
http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showpost.php?p=4806734&postcount=1
What the fuck is the matter with him ? He’s been here, he’s made some (cryptic & inane) comments. Why the FUCK doesn’t he listen ? I only had two (fairly minor) gripes to start. He’s ignored both of them.
He’s there, right now, in GQ, posting like a fucking madman, and still typing half the fucking question in the title bar…
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH.
(I feel like Frank Grimes in the Simpsons)
why isn’t the option removed? Is it the moderators idea of the apple in paradise?
Well it can be handy, when used “correctly” (and sparingly). It doesn’t bother me if someone is actually giving their post a title. If it’s a thread on great uses for chocolate, and someone uses the post title to say “Chocolate Cake”, then that just makes sense.
Grrrr when it’s just used as a lead-in (or, what I *suspect * he thinks he’s doing - a teaser of sorts) to a sentence.

In addition to the rather stupid questions he is posting, how the fuck does the above qualify as a question? (It does make the grade for ‘stupid’, however) Note the lack of ‘?’. Sad.
And regarding Mr. D’s claims that his “wife” thinks he has Aspergers Syndrome, I’d give that a resounding “nay”.
People with Aspergers Syndrome are supposed to be (quite) intelligent.
Strike one, doncha think ?
