Wow. My actual favorite Stones song is one of final two left. That never happens!

Gimme Shelter

Gimme Shelter

(Although I’m okay with calling it a tie.)

…And it only takes five strings, two fingers and one asshole to play it!
(Gimme Shelter is in open G tuning, and Keith has said the 5-2-1 thing about open G. Sympathy for the Devil is played in standard tuning.

Besides, I can’t think of any other songs with one-chord verses, much less any good songs with one-chord verses.)

Gimme Shelter, which can still give me goosebumps 30-odd years after first hearing it.

Gimme Shelter finally opens up the slimmest of leads.

Though that’s one hard choice.

It’s just a kiss away . . .

Phew!

Excellent fun, sir – thanks for running this!

I still think it should have been Monkey Man, but I enjoyed the ride, regardless. TYVM

Gah. All these great songs, and the one running through my head today is “Live with Me.”

What’s wrong with that? Great song, awesome bass riff, perfectly nasty lyrics. Why, oh, why did they let Christina Aguilera sing it in Shine a Light? I haven’t even heard it yet (the double CD will be arriving from Amazon any day), but the very idea…gak.

It is a great song – just nowhere near my all-time favorite. That would be “Gimme Shelter.”

Ah well, my favorites didn’t come in; but as the Stones sang,

May the Good Lord shine a light on you
Make every song your favorite tune
May the Good Lord shine a light on you
Warm, like the evening sun
