"Rome" to become a movie

Hmmmm. I think this has real potential: http://hollywoodinsider.ew.com/2010/03/04/hbo-rome-movie/

What do you think?

I’m there.

Yay!

Is Vorenus Wolverine? Major healing factor required! Though clearly his fate was left ambiguous for just this reason, I suppose.

Was it ambiguous? I thought it was pretty clear he’d died…

I’m rewatching the series as we speak, so I suppose I’ll get my answer sooner or later.

I’m not thrilled. What made Rome so great to me was how it had more scope and ambition than any movie could because it was knowingly made for the space tv allows.

How can they possibly tear Vorenus away from Seattle Grace?

Any movie about Rome I am interested in, bring it on. But how would a two hour movie be any different than two more one hour episodes of the show? I’m afraid they may splash mud on an otherwise excellent series.

On one hand, Vorenus clearly thought his wound would be fatal.

On the other hand, he was able to survive the trip from Egypt to Rome.

We don’t see Vorenus die, but Titus Pullo tells Augustus that Vorenus is dead.

I suppose there’s enough wiggle room to bring him back. The wound was severe but not fatal. Pullo lied to Augustus to thwart any revenge towards Vorenus for standing by Marc Antony.

Yeah, I want a movie.

And one for Deadwood also.

Great TV series but why make a movie? Are there any loose ends that need to be tied up? Pullo with his obnoxious brat kid? Watch Augustus consolidate power? Timon in Judea? None sound very interesting to me.

But if they can make a movie out of a crap series like “Firefly”, anything is possible.

By TV rules, Lucius Vorenus is no more dead than Titus Pullo is at the end of the series:

  1. You don’t see him dead,
  2. Titus Pullo doesn’t actually literally say he’s dead,
  3. Pullo is lying to Octavian anyway (about his son) and has reason to lie about Vorenus, too, and
  4. It would benefit the story to have Vorenus alive.

If “Rome” is “too big” for a movie, then “Deadwood” is too big by a factor of ten. The characters on Deadwood would need way more time to develop (or extend) than a movie could do.

And you know the ratings types would either make it whatever’s heavier than “R” this week or else make them remove at least 200 cocksucker lines. That would be like watching a Peter Pan that couldn’t fly.

“Think happy cocksucking thoughts, you fuckers!”

But there’s not a lot going on in Rome after the series ends. They could do a big jump forward or a big jump back. And just have Pullo and Vorenus there the exact same age as before. I mean they never aged on the TV show so why not?

The link in the OP pretty much says Vorenus is in it.

I’ll bite at this. Loved the HBO series, and if I get 2 more hours, well that’s 2 hours I didn’t have before.

I thought Julius Caesar’s death was pretty ambiguous too… or maybe it’s time for a historical reboot.

Could be an interesting production. Maybe they’ll finally show some actual battle scenes this time.

I’ll watch it. At worst it’ll be a generic sword-and-sandal pic, which usually enjoy anyways.

I think the idea of a movie is hotter than Vulcan’s dick!

I agree with this. I loved both Rome and Deadwood on HBO, but they really are tailored to their formats: a huge amount of character development and a long, complicated plot arc. HBO does this very well, but I don’t think it will translate easily to a movie format. That isn’t to say it is guaranteed to be bad, but I think they’ll have to go in a different direction to the show to make something that is compelling for different reasons.

Of course, I’ve watched pretty much all the HBO shows in extended Netflix sessions of about three shows in one sitting, so maybe if they make one 10 hour movie it will suit me fine

Yeah, but for no apparent reason- Augustus would have pardoned him for his service to Antony (he did most everybody else) and he wasn’t really on the run from anyone else.

Still, however they do it and WHOPPING historical omissions and all, I’ll be there for the movie. But I wouldn’t invest in it.

THIRTEEN!!! THIRTEEN!!!
