Rome: Total War... Is that it?

I remember the glory days of Shogun: Total War, but I’m kinda dissappointed in Rome: Total War. I just stomped all over the A.I. It didn’t have a prayer. And I didn’t even get to enjoy the mopping up of smashing the last enemies and clearing the field.

Maybe I’m too good (from playing Shogun and Medieval), but I don’t feel like bothering to try Hard difficulty. Is the AI actually any better, or does it just send masses and masses of troops?

And of course, I’m actually getting very tired of fighting battles. As I get more powerful, the AI gets progressively more chicken, until it almost never fights without a massive advantage. Sieges and counter-sieges are getting dull; I hate playing seige maps!

I never thought I’d say that. It used to be that I always wanted to play sieges. Now, even bothering with the battle map is something I loath and dread, and sieges are just painful.

Sieges are the worse part of the game and because there are so many cities there are a lot of sieges. Sometimes I dread having the AI take over and figure out who will win a battle. I’ve seen my 600 men defeated by 45 Carthigenians when I asked the computer to resolve the battle prompting me to say “What’chu talking 'bout, Polybius?”

I played it for a while and beat it using the Brutii. I’d like a little more variety in game play though. It’s a lot better than Shogun but I’d like more choices in alliances, wives, etc.

One of the other problems I had with it was that only the Scipii are wel set up to take any Wonders - and the wonder do have some nice effects. With the Brutii, you’re never going to get any such thing.

I guess I could try a Rush game - grab a few good territories, crank out the units, and rush the other Roman factions in a sneak attack. But after I squish the Romans, no one else will be a challenge.

As far as I know, the only thing that the difficulty level affects is the morale of troops. On high difficulty, your units rout more easily, and the enemy is harder to rout. That’s what I’ve read, at least. I could swear that a high campaign difficulty diminishes your trade income. If you want a bigger challenge, you could try playing as a non-roman faction, and take on Rome well after the Marian reforms. That’s about all I can suggest. :frowning:

One reason ( not the only one ) the BI expansion improves gameplay. Fewer cities = fewer sieges.
