Rome

Any dopers familiar with Rome - I will be taking a trip this July, with my dear sainted 82 year old mother in law. Mom’s only problem is that she prefers to walk everywhere. And she cannot really walk too far. She does not like the trains or buses. She has no real problems other than her age, and will not use a wheel chair or even the golf cart at the airport). Is there one area that might be a good place to find a hotel so that we can simply take a short stroll to some of the major sites, such as the Forum and so on?

I was in Rome last October. The Colosseum, Forum, and Pantheon are within 20 minutes of each other at a brisk walk (probably less than 1.5 miles). We stayed off of the Via Veneto, near Borghese park, but that adds another couple of miles (but does put the Spanish steps and very upscale shopping close by). I would guess that hotels “downtown” are going to be expensive (of course, everything in Rome is expensive).

Since this is seeking opinions, it is more suited to IMHO.

Rome is amazing, obviously, but it can be quite hectic and hot. Be prepared for crowds and other frustrations. Pickpockets operate at the Ph.D level.
