The better question is why do the leaders of the Democratic Party valorize bipartisanship so much. It is no virtue to cooperate with a party that has decided that ideology is an acceptable substitute for reality.

Because in Washington, the 60th Senator holds all the power. And in current America, to get to be the 60th Senator, you have to win a state that doesn’t really like you that much. QED.

Reasonable people cooperate and compromise. They continue to try to do so, using rational means, even when the other party refuses to go along.
