Ron DeSantis 2024 (Campaign suspended on January 21, 2024)

Whaaat? That’s not very manly of him. I thought the MAGA folks just love a good dictator. I would have thought that the MAGAts would expect a twitter response from Biden in all caps insulting the entire state and calling them names. This is what a REAL MANLY president is expected to do, right?

A little good news for him:

New and Improved Crazy!!1! Not your Dad’s crazy!!!11!!!

This is very funny.

Dan

Ron is criticizing the government about 9/11 transparency. I will offer DeSantis a very small crumb of praise if he also starts going after Trump over the LIV golf tournament. It might even help Ronnie win a few points.

95% of the human population is genetically immune to Hansen’s disease, and it’s also the least contagious of the communicable diseases. I honestly think it’s the result of correct diagnosis, because a doctor in the area had seen it before and knew what it looked like. It’s not difficult to treat, either.

Anyway, as incredibly unpopular as De(mon)Santis is, I just can’t believe he’s voluntarily staying in the ring.

Ron DeSantis had an interview with Linsey Davis of ABC news, where he outlined some of his positions on issues and tried to show his differences from Trump. I didn’t listen, but he went over a few things. For example (since I don’t think I should cut 'n’paste the whole thing):

On his idea of shooting migrants at the border: We “would be able to differentiate a drug smuggler from other migrants.” How? “The same way you would tell for anything,” By “collecting intelligence.” Just like in Afghanistan.

IOW:

See? Easy peasy.

From the above article:

Earlier this month, DeSantis’s administration advised against the updated COVID-19 for Florida residents under the age of 65, which goes against federal guidelines that recommend updated shots for anyone 6 months or older.

Asked on ABC News Live Prime if he would push the same policy if he were elected president, DeSantis said he wouldn’t allow federal funding for COVID-19 vaccines and that people involved in the federal response to the pandemic would be held accountable for what he maintained were harmfully restrictive public health measures intended to cut widespread infections and deaths.

“We’re going to have a reckoning about all these COVID policies. We’re going to hold people accountable who got it wrong, people that clung to the lockdowns, people that clung to the school closures,” DeSantis said.

Would not allow federal funding for COVID vaccines.

If you can’t afford it, you should die. Survival of only the (economically) fittest is certainly standard Reactionary Wacko Traitor doctrine. And DeSantis is trying real hard to outflank all of them on the far, far right.

And we have a possible preview of how that might play out.

I think 1. would be more like: Brown person carrying a baby: Sex or Human Trafficker. Shoot to kill.

But luckily for the world, he is sinking in the polls. Even Vivek (eek) is ahead of him now.

Maybe a bit too early for a post-mortem:

Maybe. But I think the article was a cogent analysis of what they did, why they did it, and how it mostly backfired. It also show DeSantis as maybe a decent manager in pursuit of Evil, but a tin-eared politician in pursuit of the same Evil.

Although DeSantis, like any R primary candidate, will be attacked continuously by the blaring trumpet if he does anything, or doesn’t do anything that seems to be working.

DeSantis chose not to “dignify” trump’s early attacks with a response. Thereby, in the article’s view, tarring DeSantis with trump’s brushstrokes. While I think that’s a decent analysis, the problem is that it assumes there’s an effective alternative. A way to out-trumpet the trumpeter by hitting back. And that doing so won’t increase the attacks you have to fend off. IMO responding to trump still amounts to letting him set your agenda and tell your story. Just louder.

The idea that Ron wanted to present a year of successful red-meat legislation then sell himself as an effective Fascist rather than the other guy who’s a mere Fascist-sounding blow-hard makes sense. But it also surrendered control of the successes he’d run on to the FL legislature; as scurvy a hive of scum and villainy as has ever been assembled.

Who duly picked the dumbest most easily ridiculed topics to actually pass.

Could Ron recover, especially if trump can’t (not won’t) run? Sure. Could he have been in a stronger position today by not fiddling while trump set fire to DeSantis’ Rome? Sure could have.

This looks like a desperation move by DeSantis. What will he gain by debating someone not running against him in the primary? If he “wins” it may bolster his standing with the people already in his corner - it’s not like he’s vying for people in Newsom’s camp. If he “loses” and looks like a fool, he risks losing support from his backers. I am not seeing this as anything but a hail-Mary with very little potential upside. What am I missing?

OH! “Own a lib!” - like I have been saying, it’s like crack for some of the Republicans - Ron cannot resist a chance to get some!

I’m more confused about what Newsom thinks he’ll gain from this. And especially with it being operated by and broadcast by Fox. No matter how well Newsom does, the post-game commentary will cover only his failures.

Newsom has seemed from my great distance here in FL to be a sound strategic thinker. This decision baffles me. Suggesting there’s something fundamental about this situation that I’m unaware of.

Seriously, there is nothing smart about this from Newsom.

Me too. Seems like a strange thing for Newsom to do.

Makes no sense.

I think Newsom is just out for a good time, at ANY repub’s expense.

Dan

I think Newsom chews him up and spits him out. I recall how he handled Hannity—he handed his ass to him.

DeSantis is a stiff. I hope he tries some of his “you’re a woke commie” bullshit on Newsom.
