Rose Bowl - (#1) USC vs. (#2) Texas - Stand Up and Be Counted!

Ah, it will be a brand new season tomorrow in the SDMB WPT! Just like freshly mowed grass in September! Or April.

Right now, it looks like he’s not going to go pro. The Texans already have a QB who I guess they don’t want to quit on, and perhaps NFL scouts aren’t impressed by his throwing? A few people here have questions his motion.

Hook 'em horns

Texas 41, USC 38.

Holy crap, what a game.

There was also another blown call on what seemed to be an interception by the Longhorns that was never called. USC scored on that drive, so each team got a gift.

Well, on our local ABC station here in LA said that the officials didn’t review the play where Young already had his knee on the ground and he lateralled to his running back for their first touchdown…reason?

The monitor in the review room was malfunctioning.

Duke…I’m not whining…just reporting the facts.

To all the Texas Exes and fans - HOOK 'EM!!!

Just getting my voice back. I think the neighbors upstairs thought I killed someone. I had some Cali guys over and two of them are buying Vince Young jerseys tomorrow.

Frosh year at UT, I went to the Cotton Bowl and watch our boys get their asses handed to them by the “U.” I represented Austin up here in the Hub though! Mrs. Hippy Hollow and I, proud Texas Exes, will have a difficult morning tomorrow as we’ve been yelling and screaming all night!

When will the press stop shining SC? After arguably the greatest performance by any player in any bowl game in history, what does ABC do? They go to Carroll and Leinhart. Short of the trophy presentation I didn’t see VY until about 45 minutes after the game on ESPN. And why didn’t anyone call out Bush’s lateral as the DUMBEST PLAY OF THE YEAR? Seriously, I don’t care if it worked in high school. That was horrendous.

Yeah, we got away with a call but you’ve got to be smoking crack if you think Texas wouldn’t have scored from the 10 yard line. There were a few phantom calls in favor of SC (late hit?) but I will enjoy this victory. Hook 'em!!!

When I switched off ESPN a few minutes ago, they were wondering (with graphcs and all) if Young’s performance was the greatest ever. Answer your question?

That definitely was a late hit.

Anybody else remember the 20 or 30 seconds that ran off the clock after a Texas player went out of bounds following a catch? That seems sort of important.

I recall that, it was strange. Of course on the following play the clock stopped following a tackle in bounds. They didn’t balance each other out quite, but it was a goofy bit of timekeeping by the booth.

Also, anyone who doesn’t think that Pete Carroll wasting 2 time outs in the second half wasn’t the difference you’re insane.

Yeah. It took that record-breaking performance from Young to force them to give the man his props. Even an Aggie living in Norman would have to doff his cap to Mr. Young, so they really couldn’t discuss Reggie Leinhart or Matt Bush anymore.

I’m probably a little sensitive after USCPN’s SC vs. Every Great Team In College History series. Everyone thought we would be blown out of the building but that’s not how it went down. There’s a thread in the Pit ripping Texas because Mack Brown lobbied for a BCS slot last year… which didn’t seem to be much of an issue after Texas Tech, a team we beat in the regular season, took Cal to the woodshed, and Texas broke off Michigan in one of the most exciting Rose Bowls ever…

Hippy Hollow, get a grip dude. Vince Young got tons of hype all season and leading up to this game. USC had won back-to-back championships so to bitch about a little extra ESPN air time discussing their place in history (trying to do something NO ONE has ever done) is pretty pig-headed.

There is absolutely no room for the “disrepect” card to be played by either team before this game or after it. Sheesh.

In other news, Tom Brady feels the Pats are getting disrespected this year. yawn

That stuff was a little overboard, but then again, it’s one of the best teams ever. And not everybody thought Texas was going to get blown out. For whatever reason, many experts had come to UT’s side in recent days. I think Sports Illustrated’s top story yesterday afternoon was ‘Why Texas Will Win.’

Sorry, Omniscient, but I guess you don’t watch College Gameday, or listen to the ESPN analysts. In '04 the knock was that Vince couldn’t throw. So he leads the nation in passing efficiency, goes to Columbus and beats Ohio State with his arm. People (Mark May, Herbstreit) still say that Texas is soft and that Virginia Tech is possibly better until they get taken to the woodshed by Miami.

Vince Young got a little love for the Rose Bowl but nothing compared to White, Leinhart, Jarrett, and Bush. What about the Bush love-fest when he ran ragged over a way overhyped, overrated Fresno State team? Don’t you think, judging from both Young’s and Bush’s numbers and performances this year, that the greatest landslide Heisman victory in history was a bit disrespectful to Young?

Second, the very idea of trying to compare teams from different eras is stupid beyond words. How the hell do you even begin to compare teams outside of say, a five-year period?

Actually I watch that crap constantly, to a point of embarrassment. And speaking as someone with no rooting interest in this game (Illinois alum and mild Big Ten honk) I will say that Texas got plenty of hype in this game.

USC was a bigger media story, no doubt, they’ve won two straight titles. Had the longest winning streak by a wide margin and were on the verge of doing something historic. By virtue of those facts, they were the easier team to discuss.

They were also favored, understandibly, because they had more talent on the whole offensively. Vince Young might be the best college player in that game, he certainly was today.

USC got more press by virtue of recent history, but Texas was by no means disrespected and opinions on who’d win this game were pretty split. You need to take the burnt orange glasses off, because Texas was never disrespected.

HH, you are acting as if Texas whipped USC, 70-3, like overhyped Colorado. The game was CLOSE. It was an epic game, decided by inches, reviewed calls and non-calls. Texas didn’t get no disrespect from me when all was said and done…BUT, of course ESPN is gonna hype up a team looking for their third title…it hasn’t been done since Notre Dame from 1946-49. If Texas is in the same spot 2 years from now, are you gonna let some yahoo from Washington State whip out the disrespect card because Texas has been overhyped? Please say no, so I can call you a liar.

Hey, Vince looked great out there and deserved to win with those last two drives…but I ain’t sucking any appendage on that dude, and I wouldn’t expect any sportscaster to do the same.

You know, after consideration I’m going to take this a step futher. I think opinions on which team was better and which would win were more uncertain than for any BCS Championship game in memory.

And when was the last time a big game did a better job of living up to (and surpassing) the hype that preceded it?

I’ve spoken to a couple of USC fans that seem down. I told them to cheer up - their team played so well that only an inhuman performance by Young could have beaten them.

Are there any individual bowl game performances that can rival what Vince Young did?

What the fuck? Where did I say “TEXAS IS THE GREATEST WE WHIPPED SC !1!1!!?” Where the fuck do you get that from?

Funny, I never called YOU out for not respecting Texas. I think most logical thinking college fans would have stated that SC was probably not quite as good as the hype and that Texas was a little better.

First, don’t prognosticate that I’m going to jump ship on the idiocy of comparing a current team to historical teams. I don’t appreciate your predicting that I’m a liar.

Second, just as you can say that Texas waltzed through a fairly soft Big XII this year, SC didn’t exactly destroy football giants week in week out. Strength of schedule wise, I think both teams had pretty soft schedules - I think Sagarin had Texas at 8 and SC at 13. Watching SC play vs. Arizona State and Oregon showed that they were vulnerable once Leinart got pressured. It was a great matchup and I was surprised that so many prognosticators were leaping on the SC bandwagon without considering that fact. I suspect sports media folks started to realize the SC hype was over the top in the past week or so, when people who actually watched the games started to protest.

Third, I’m not alone in this opinion. Jim Rome, a SoCal guy, just stated on his radio show that the ESPN hype was OTT and understandably Texas would take offense to the tongue-bathing for SC. The NY Giants tight end - Cross, I think his name is - on CSTV made the same comment. Mike Wilbon and Tony Kornheiser even dedicated the “Five Good Minutes” section to Texas because of the excessive SC hype.

I’m not calling out USC themselves because they never added to it - it’s the sports media, specifically ESPN, that I feel should be enjoying heaping mounds of crow.

Remember Herbstreit predicting Texas A&M to win the Big XII South at the start of the season, despite Texas winning the Rose Bowl in '05?

That’s what happens when your team wins 34 games in a row and 1 1/2 championships.

He put on an amazing performance in a game his team otherwise would surely have lost. I think you’re being touchy if you complain about a love-fest in a game where he had 500+ total yards (and set a record for it, I think). Young’s getting the same treatment now that Bush got after that game.
