Well boys, it was a good game.
FINAL
Texas - 41
USC - 38
Great game, with some quirky calls…but I feel that Texas deserves it.
How big was that blown call on that first Texas touchdown?
Now for the knee whining phase…
Congrats to the Longhorns.
Gotta give it up for Vince Young. He played his ass off.
Naw that big to me…they would have scored on THAT drive regardless.
Can anyone describe what happened on the final couple of plays? (Didn’t see 'em).
Not that big. :smack:
Hell of a game. I wonder if anyone will actually rip him for it, given the success he’s had over the last couple of years, but the choice to go for it (pure hubris, by the way) on 4th instead of pinning Texas back probably cost them the game, and if they didn’t waste that timeout on the two point try, it leaves Leinart a lot more flexibility on that last play to pick up another 10-15 yards and at least give them a chance to tie.
What it really comes down to, though, is that Vince Young was a man among boys. That delivery would scare the hell out of me as a NFL scout, but the rest of the package?.. wow.
I did say that on the previous page. Perhaps I can be first among the second-guessers.
USC got good FP on the kick off, made a nice gain on the next play up to about midfield, 8 seconds left. Incomplete pass, time ran out.
Vince young scored the winning touchdown on a broken pass play with some fine backfield running and around the right side to the corner goal line.
Carroll calls time out on the 2 point conversion and wastes it…it really became a non-factor though.
Following kick-off was a pooch kick that made it to the second line…guy gets stop around the 30 or 35. 19 seconds left.
Leinart passes to Bush who snuck out of the backfield and makes a decent run to the 50 or Texas 45. 8 seconds left.
Leinart runs around the pocket and throws a pass out of bounds on the left side…game over.
The last part of the game, in summary:
::USC has fourth and two at the Texas ~40, with 2:20 or so remaining, and chooses to go for it instead of punt. They are stopped at least six inches short.
::Texas marches down the field. Young does everything; is aided by a 5-yard face mask (on replay, could have been more, but 5 was enough) that gave just enough for a first down on what otherwise would have been a fourth and 5. On a 4th and 5 from the ~10, Young runs it into the corner of the end zone, putting Texas up and pushing his rushing yards over 200 for the night (to go with 250+ passing)
::Texas comes out to go for two, as the score is now 39-38. USC inexplicably calls time out before the conversion attempt, their last. After the TO, Young runs it in anyways.
::Texas groundballs the kickoff, USC gets it on their own 30 or so with 0:18 left.
::Leinart shovels a pass to Bush, who runs it to the Texas 43 with 0:08 left.
::USC snaps to try to get another chunk of yardage in seven seconds, or toss it into the end zone. Neither happens; a Leinart pass sails out of bounds as time expires. Bedlam.
See, Yeti is better at play-by-play.
I always second-guess Carroll, it’s my nature, I watched him ruin my NFL team for a couple of years You can drive the Carroll-screw-up-bandwagon if you want, though!
Better than me, Kiros did a fine job.
Many thanks, guys. No need for a TV while I have the SDMB.
And like Vince Van Patten…my play-by-play is better than my actual play.
I guess we’ll test that theory tomorrow!
