Yeah, also the shawm, racket, and serpent were not noted for their breath efficiency. Then you’d have to grab a soprano or sopranino recorder and blow the poor thing so sharp that dogs in the next street would wet themselves!
Haven’t tried a serpent but I agree on shawms and rackets.

I don’t know what kind of music we’d play, but I bet we’d have a lot of fun playing it!
Some modern (and better) version of “We Are the World”, no doubt.
Thanks to @xtenkfarpl for instigating and @spoons for compiling this!
We’d need a heck of a big stage (or studio)!
I’ll free up some space by working at the mixing console rather than being a player….
Great list!
Whatever music we wind up making, perhaps one of our more talented number could arrange some 14-part-harmony for us vocalists? ![]()
Unfortunately I don’t think Bach is taking commissions at the moment.
Probably have to settle for the traditional 4-part soprano, alto, tenor and bass?
Time to get a name for this big band/orchestra! The obvious one would be the Straight Dopers. Or maybe Cecil’s Disciples?
ETA: thought of a better one: The Notorious Nitpickers.
I think overall, we will sound like my favorite wind instrument: the cacophone.
But probably quite useful for a remake of ‘A Day in the Life’, perhaps?
Enough pianists to play the final chord, at least.
A Confederacy of Dopers.
But do we have enough pianos?
Unfortunately that might be misinterpreted in a few different ways: political or criminal? ![]()
In fact to be serious, we’re not ever all going to play at the same time.
However, I really enjoy collaborating with other musicians, playing, arranging and songwriting. Some of my material is linked to on the parallel thread about ‘composers and recordists’. Both solo and with others.
It’s very easy to work together with the tools available today using the Internet. If anyone has any interest in this, drop me a PM and we’ll see where it goes!
Sounds too much like nosepickers.
I played violin in school. Switched to guitar in college. I played in cover bands for fun.
My career kept me too busy to continue playing regularly. I’m currently playing at church.
Todays technology is too intimidating. I don’t have enough free time to setup a home studio. There’s too much to learn. I might try if I was single and 20.
Heck my church’s sound system is way beyond me. They live stream. I just plug in and play.
Not sure what counts, but I play the guitar. Not so well anymore but I still play a couple of times a week.
I’ve written a song or two.
We should perform “Mr. Roboto”.
Something from the Fresh Aire catalog perhaps? Anyone know Chip Davis??
Fun side fact: those of you old enough to remember that cheesy ‘70s song Convoy that started the CB craze and spawned a Burt Reynolds movie or two? That was written by Chip Davis. We went to see a Fresh Aire Christmas concert and were dumbfounded when halfway through they broke into Convoy…!!!
Now that’s a twist! Woulda been fun!
