I did a Google search a couple of days ago to find out when the DVD is coming out (August) and stumbled on a message board here: http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/content.php?contentid=6337
where people were discussing the DVD.
5 hours? I know PJ is restoring some cut Saruman footage, but does anyone know what else is going in?
Theonering.net originally posted a report that PJ said the movie would be 4 hours, 50 minutes long, but it turns out the reporter who asked PJ misheard him. Apparently PJ really said 4 hours, 15 minutes instead.
Aintitcoolnews.com ran this about a month ago. Scroll down just a little bit to see what they’ve heard will be added to the EE. I think the first rumor has no basis whatsoever, and that it was just started by someone who wanted to get the fans worked up. The rest of it sounds pretty good though.
Well I obviously haven’t heard anything, but there are a couple scenes that I can guess will probably be in it. The scene from the Houses of the Healing were left out, and were kind of important in the book. And also, when Aragorn and Gandalf and the lot get to Mordor there should be a little scene added with the Mouth of Sauron when guy comes out and says they have captured their hobbit and has his clothes and all. There was a character listed for Mouth on imdb.com before the film was released, so I think at least those two are a good bet. Oh, and there will probably be more buildup between Faramir and Eowyn.
Peter Jackson said in the commentary on the first dvd that they didn’t do the scouring scene. He also said that when Frodo looks into Galadrial’s little tub of water that that scene was his tribute to the scouring. So, yeah, that unfortunately will not be included.
Things supposedly in the ROTK: EE–
Mouth of Sauron
Houses of Healing
Gandalf vs the Witch King
Eomer reacting to Theoden’s death and Eowyn’s injury
Aragorn taunting Sauron via the Palantir
Denethor looking into the Palantir and seeing his doom
Merry pledging fealty to King Theoden
Saruman’s death
There probably will be additional scenes for the Paths of the Dead too. This much I gleaned from the Return of the King video game.
There’s probably be some extenison of the footage at the Black Gate. In the movie, there’s a big plot contiunity loophole where Aragorn and co. started out on horseback but then were fighting unhorsed the next moment.
I’m hoping they show more of Frodo and Sam trekking across Mordor. In the movie, they go from their Gonzo orc helmets to regular clothes. I hope they show them running with the orcs.
I do remember that PJ did film how Frodo and Sam got mistaken for a couple of Orcs and were made to march a long way. (Yes, it’s in that part of the book where the famed “When there’s a whip, there’s a way!” song comes from).
5 hours? Hell, I thought PJ could’ve cut at least 30 min from the theater release, probably more, starting by cutting the 50+ endings that never ended.
