I think it would be horribly stupid of New Line to “balk at the price for another Extended Edition” because they’ve made so much money on these things already. I think whoever came up with that rumor in the first place just wanted to make fans panic a bit.
That’s your opinion. Mine differs.
I’m thrilled that we’ll get to see Aragorn use some of his Kingly Healing Power; it’ll show that he was not just another ordinary human who happened to fulfill a prophecy. I’m glad that there’s more closure to him and Eowyn than “Welcome to Dumpsville; population: You!” and I hope we get a few lines about her courage, Theoden’s funeral, and the stirrings of romance with Faramir (who also is sort of neglected in the movie).
And closure on Saruman and Wormtongue! The parallel Merry/Theoden scene (people might wonder why Merry was so deferential to Theoden before the battle). Woo Hoo!

More from the rumor mill – The RoTK EE will be 5 hours + in length. (theonering.net)
That’s great news, Murcielago. Mr. Pug was unhappy with ROTK, which he said was “too long and yet too rushed. They should have made it into two films.” Well, 5+ hours sounds like two films to me, so I’m looking forward to November.
Yay! Another 12 months of anticipation!
In the film, Theoden asks Eomer to take the left, Gamling to follow the king’s banner, and Brimbo (sp?) to take the right.
(I checked the Encyclopedia of Arda; the closest name that resembles what Theoden said is Brego. Although, I could’ve swore I heard an ‘M’ in the name.)
A damned shame that they won’t be dealing with the Shire. That was one of the better parts of the book, IMO. Less Gollum character development hoopajoo would certainly open up a bit of room for the Shire scene…
Brimbo = Grimbold, I believe. ElfHelm should have been the other marshall, but you may be right, and they had Gamling in his place. In the films, he’s not the old codger he is in the books.
Grimbold and ElfHelm were the two capains under Theodred at the Battle of the Fords of Isen, and along with Eomer and Erkenbrand are the chief marshalls under Theoden.

Frankly, I never liked the Scouring of the Shire. It didn’t work for me in the books and I don’t think it would have worked well in film either.
