A friend told me about this, and I visited. Once. I haven’t been back since. It’s not that I’m squeamish, but there’s something extremely distasteful about reveling in this.
I haven’t seen the “Nothing comes between me and my Harley” picture, but I’ve seen something like it that gives this a positive spin, if you need it. At an exhibit on prostheses at the Boston Museum of Science a few years ago they had some incredibly graphic photos and movies (they cautioned the squeamish). One guy had virtually his entire face from his orbits to his upper jaw eaten away by some disease – there was a disturbing large and deep cavity in his head where his nose and sinuses ought to be, extending (it seemed ) all the way back to his brain pan. There was no upper palate, either.
After showing you this, the guy snapped his prosthesis into place and popped in an upper dental plate. Damn! The guy looked and sounded almost completely normal! His nose and cheeks weren’t quite the right shade, but you could look right at him, and he could talk and eat. Even in such extreme circumstances, you can come back. The human body (and human ingenuity) is extremely resilient.
There has been so much discussion about the “Harley” photo on Rotten.com. At least one thread here has been devoted to deciding if it was real or if it had been “Photoshopped”. I came across an article on Brutal News about six months ago which was devoted to discussing the ethics of Rotten.com. The article contained a reference to the Harley photo. It said the photo was of a guy whose face had been blown off with a “cap gun”. I almost sure that’s correct, I may be a little off. Anyway, the “Harley face” seems to be the result of an industrial mishap rather than a motorcycle accident. I know a lot of people were curious. It’s definitely real.
Everybody who lived before the start of last century would have been confronted with Rotten.com material for real every day of their lives. It would have been unavoidable. Dead people everywhere. Women giving birth everywhere. Disease everywhere. Isn’t it always a joke when professed “nature lovers” turn tail and run screaming from little wild animals like mice, hedgehogs and lizards? Did they do that on the Oregon Trail, I wonder? I don’t like to believe that I’m feeble. I look at Rotten.com so I can develop some character.
Fair enough Phlip, I misread. That “sit down” thing though? It sounds remarkably like “Score!” and makes you sound like a jackass.

This topic gets me fired up, not as much because the pictures are disturbing, but because I find it hard to believe that everyone in the world doesnt agree with me!!!

Rotten.com, stileproject.com, and dozens of other sites post dismemberment pictures and liposuction surgeries gone awry pictures and aborted fetus pictures every day and have done so for years. Their content is freely available elsewhere on the Internet. Some stuff has circulated for years. But the events they illustrate are nothing new. Death and accidents are nothing new. Disagreeable and unpleasant acts and events are nothing new. People doing crap for kicks or simply because they can is nothing new, either.
What is (relatively) new is that shmoes like you and me suddenly have photographic evidence that it happens. And predictibly enough, there’s outrage. Like yours.
You have a problem with a baby being eaten? Good for you! So do I. It’s wrong, illegal, and gross. You have a problem with kids being sexually assaulted? Hey, what a coincidence. So do I. Catch the twisted fuck responsible, and throw his sorry ass in the electric chair and watch him fry, I say.
We’re on the same page so far, right? Because coming up here’s where we’ll start to disagree.
First of all, I don’t buy everything I read or see on the Internet. Second (and pay attention here, because this is the big point), I don’t shoot the messenger.
How much of rotten.com or stileproject.com’s content is real? I don’t know. As a lot of the material is submitted secondhand or thirdhand from site visitors, I wouldn’t put a lot of faith in the accuracy of the picture descriptions. I wouldn’t put a lot of faith in the authenticity of the pictures, period.
But let’s say the photos are authentic, and they are graphic enough to need no description. What do I do?
Well, now. After I’m done regretting I clicked on the link, I click no further. I leave the site, and I never go back. If I’m really offended, I contemplate expressing my displeasure in an e-mail to the webmaster.
I do not run to my favorite message board and whine in the Designated Whining Area. I do not start whiny threads about the offending site. I do not launch into a whiny tirade about how if you post pictures like that, you’re a sick fuck and you deserve to be shot for it. And because I realize I am expressing an opinion on a public message board, I do not expect people to support my point of view, nor do I spout "Fuck you"s to anyone who chimes in to disagree with me.
Your approach obviously differs.
rotten.com and stileproject.com do not go out and commit vile acts just to catch them on film. They do not encourage others to commit vile acts and catch them on film. So far as I can tell, they do not solicit, pay for, or finance footage of vile acts.
They just post about it.
You can argue that by posting their content, webmasters of such shock sites are condoning the acts shown. If that is true, then every newspaper, magazine and television newscast that features the spectacle du jour is likewise condoning murder, arson, burglary, bribery, fraud, and prostitution.
And all you’re bitching about is one website.
Oh, but the Morality of it! you say. It’s exploitation! you say.
Maybe. But you’re bitching to the wrong people.
Take your issues to the molesters who rape children. Take your outrage to the people who are blowtorching the skin off still-alive pigs. Take your whining to the asshole who steals accident or crime scene photos, knowing that some sick bastard out there will want to post them, and maybe even pay good money for them. Because those are the people with greater responsibility for your offense.
The webmasters of those sites don’t make the news, buddy; they just post about it.
Do you really want a law to smack those sites down? Do you really want morality to be laid out in writing by your government? I don’t. Nor do I want someone like you deciding for me what I should be able to see on the internet. I bet you sure as hell don’t want me deciding the same thing for you, right?

Remind me not to get in a dispute with AudreyK. That was a sound ass-whuppin’ if I ever read one! That, and I have to agree. The site is pretty gross, and if you look at stuff like that, it will make you think. And yes, they can basically put anything they want on their page. It’s kind of along the lines of the “Faces of Death” movies. Sure, they’re gross. And they are said to be real. But who really knows? (I saw FOD 4 in the theater. Tell me that shit was real. I’ll laugh in your face.)
Think of it this way. What you consider to be shocking may not be to other people. Take watching a documentary about some horrible atrocity. You can see a lot of horrible, real imagery on the History Channel, for cryin’ out loud. But you don’t see people wanting to take that off the air. The evening news shows dead bodies covered with sheets, but people will still pay $7.50 to go see Bruce Willis shoot the bad guys in the movies.
Don’t get me wrong. It’s good that you are outraged that something is portrayed as a realistic picture of a dead baby, etc. That shows that you haven’t been de-sensitized by the media. The only thing you can do now is to avoid advertising it. (Even negatively.) The less exposure it gets, the closer it is to going away.
