Router and DNS problems, help.

Calling all computer experts…

I don’t fully understand this DNS thing, so if I explain something incorrectly please forgive me. As I understand it the DNS turns the ‘word’ web address into the number web address.

I have two computers hooked up to a hub and router (both Linksys) for my DSL, everything was working fine until I tried to use one computer to fax something over a regular phone line. After that, that computer would not connect to the internet, but some experimenting reveled that it would connect if I typed in the IP address in numbers. Linksys tech support told me to open the TCP/IP adapter that connects to the router (hub) and enable DNS. I did this using my ISPs ‘Domain’ (Verizon.net) and the DNS Search order info from the router.

It worked–kinda, now the computer will connect to the internet, but it is extremely slow to (like being on the SDMB all the time, but worse ;)) and gives the ‘cannot find server (The page cannot be displayed)’ page a lot. The other computer still worked fine and at normal speed without any modifications. The computer that has the problem is using windows ME. I think the router is supposed to do the whole DNS thing automatically, the other computer has DNS disabled and works perfect.

Any ideas on how to fix this?, thanks.

Yo, anachronism.

I Don’t use Me, but see if it has the following program and run it:

winipcfg

(Click Start->run, type it in.)

Once up, click “more info”.

Select your network adapter/modem/serial port or whatever you are using. Post the info for both machines. Note there are subtle "…"s next to the DNS ip addresses. Click on it to see all of them. Very useful info.

Also check under Internet Options, what connection is the default and its settings. (From IE or Control Panel.) I suspect the problem lies here.
