Actually, John has never worked out well for the royal family. Aside from the notorious one, the last time the family tried “John,” he was the youngest of George V’s six children (when George was still Prince of Wales). John was an epileptic who died young, and rarely made public appearances with the family. Personally, I wonder if he had Dravet’s syndrome. It’s a sodium channel defect that results in seizures, various degrees of retardation, and a progressive movement disorder, the progression of which varies greatly by patient, and no one is entirely sure if it is just another symptom of the sodium transfer defect, or possibly related to brain damage from tonic-clonic seizures. It’s genetic, but it’s a spontaneous mutation, so there don’t have to be any other examples of it in the royal family.
Other Johns in the family have not worked out well either. There’s a bit of a superstition around it in the royal family now, apparently.
Since Charlotte is actually “Charlotte Elizabeth Diana,” Diana and Elizabeth are probably out of the running.
I kinda surprised Alice is on top of the list. That was the name of Edward VII’s notorious mistress.
The last John who was anywhere close to the throne was the queen’s uncle*, who died at the age of 13. There is a living John, but he’s a Knatchbull - one of Mountbatten’s g’grandchildren – and is several hundred steps down the line of succession.
