Royal Pewter

Many years ago I did a garage clean out for someone that allowed us to take everything in lieu of payment. Mostly tols and odds and ends. Amount the junk was a still in the box set of pewter cups. They were stemless and plain and about 3 1/2" tall. Metal was so soft you could not handle the cup without liquid in it or it would bend in your hand.

On the paperwork in the box it showed them to be Royal pewter and it explicitly indicated not to confuse royal pewter with common pewter. The price of each cup was listed as something like $800.00 each. I have searched all over the web and can find nothing on royal pewter beyond a company that uses Royal in the brand name. Has anyone even heard of a distinct metal known as Royal Pewter?

Royal Selangor pewter comes from Malaysia, but doesn’t seem to attract anywhere near those prices.http://www.royalselangor.com/

I looked at that company which is also a brand. The cups I had were made in Holland.

There is also Kongetinn which is Norwegian for Royal Pewter which seems nearer the mark. Again more from ‘royal’ association than some particular metal.

I also see Royal Holland Pewter although that seems to be (confusingly) Danish.

Is there any sort of hallmark on the cups, or manufacturer name on the box?

They were well marked but I haven’t seen them in over 20 years, my ex told me she tossed them in the trash when she moved. It kind of pisses me off as I told her if she ever decided to get rid of these cups I wanted them. The cups were smooth with no markings except on the bottom of the cup. They were probably made in the early 1960’s. I got them in the 70’s and the box did not look all that old.

In passing, and hoping this does not lead you down a blind alley, “Holland”, in addition to the historical County of the Netherlands that comes to mind immediately when an American hears the name, was also one of the three regions into which Lincolnshire, England was divided, along with Lindsey and Kesteven, The English small city Boston for which the Massachusetts city was named was either in or on the borders of Holland – ,ap’s not clear on this.

And there are New Hollands all over the world, including five in the USA.
