Running digital distribution game sale/special thread

Impulse is having a sale that also benefits the Child’s Play charity.

Dragon Age + Expansion for $30 is pretty awesome. Giant THQ pack for $50 is hard to beat. In all over 100 games are half off.

The company of heroes games this week on steam are 75% off. You can get the original for $2.50, original + first expansion (gold) for $7.50, and complete (original + 2 exps) for $12.50. I recommend the $7.50 pack since the second expansion doesn’t add too much, although it’s easily worth $12.50 for the whole deal.

If you don’t at the very least grab the original COH for $2.50, you should just stab yourself in the face.

Altitude, an indie 2d dogfighter game that’s fun, is half off for $5 and free to play during this weekend too.

Last few hours to grab CoH. 93 meta rating, probably the best RTS ever. $2.50. Or I recommend the gold pack for $7.50. But at least the base game.

CoH looks good, but I just suck so mightily at RTS. I haven’t been any good at them since Dune 2.

There’s a demo of CoH, I’m downloading it now. I won’t have to like it too much to drop 7 bucks on it.

Lead developer of CoH just died. Horrible tragic accident.

CoH isn’t like previous games. It isn’t about how well you can micro or how well you can macro. It’s about positioning and tactics. If you embrace the gameplay concepts in the tutorial, you’re set. It’s also beautiful.

The only complaint I have about the game is the terrible patching. Every patch is like 2 GB and automatically pushed via steam. Maybe they’ve taken care of that though since I’ve had it active on my list.

You can also download and play the Company of Heroes Online beta for free – it includes the original Company of Heroes campaign. COHO a persistent online spinoff of CoH, where you get a Commander with special abilities that levels up, hero units, etc. But none of that matters if you just want to play the campaign.

I played it for a few hours and I have to disagree; the tactical nature of the game makes micro-ing invaluable. Unfortunately, the interface makes it difficult.

As far as I can tell, you can’t automate simple things like ability usage. Your infantry squad will not throw their grenades at a cluster of enemies unless you specifically tell them to. They’re also not smart enough to make sure they’re on the RIGHT side of cover; often times a few members of my squad will walk around to the enemy side of the sandbags and attack from there.

Tank battles are just as micro-heavy because there is no formation move. You have to individually control tanks and battles devolve to circular dances where both tanks try to get at each others’ rear or side armor.

Mixed-squadron attacks are horrendous. There is no easy way to get infantry to stay near the tanks they’re trying to support, and wheeled vehicles will get to a destination too quick for armor.

The interface in general is clunky and antiquated (or at least I just couldn’t figure out how to do what normally are simple RTS things): Bookmarking map locations, removing a squad from a control group, rallying into a garrison, ordering a garrisoned squad directly from their garrison, select all units of a type across the whole map, etc.

I think it’s all micro, micro, micro. It might sound like nitpicking, but I stopped playing in part because I felt like I was fighting the interface more than the enemy.

The Steam Company of Heroes sale is still going even though it was supposed to be a weekend only sale. So if you haven’t snatched up at least the base game, make sure to do that, not sure when it’ll end.

Space Siege, Secret of the Magic Crystal, and Football Manager 2010 are all 1/2-2/3 off too.

King Arthur The Role Playing Wargame and Puzzle Quest 2 are 1/3rd off.

On direct2drive, Tropico 3, the Penumbra collection and the Titan Quest bundle are all $6 each.

LucasArts is having one day sales on all their games, with a different sale every week, on Steam. Along with a complete collection of star wars games for $50. Today is Knights of the Old Republic for $2.50.

D2D has a bunch of stuff on $6 sale. King’s bounty: armored princess, SWAT 4, Pirates!, others.

Minecraft is having (well, just had) a free weekend. It should be gone by tomorrow, but if you need something to entertain you tonight, definitely try it out.

Looks like Good Old Games is shutting down. According to the website, there will be an opportunity starting Thursday to download any games you’ve purchased. Seems like a shame, that was one of my favorite sites, although apparently I didn’t purchase enough from them to keep them in business. :frowning:

Impulse has blacklight: tango down for $3.75. Looked counterstrikish IIRC. Haven’t played it for 4 bucks I’ll take a shot.

I fell for it – GOG.com not closing, just a hoax. Silly me.

L4D2 is $6 on steam or $10 for a l4d/l4d2 bundle. I made a thread about it specifically.

That is an offer I couldn’t refuse, even if I have too much else going on to actually play it right now. The Steam servers are apparently being brought to their knees, very slow response times.

On sale on steam currently. Killing floor (and related DLC) for $10, Modern Warfare 2 for $40 (not a great deal and I can’t recommend it), Sol Survivor for $5 which is a tower defense game. Also free to play for the weekend, so try before you buy.

There’s a combo pack on impulse to buy both sins of a solar empire expansions for $15. Also Demigod for $6.

The Tales of Monkey Island Complete Pack is 86% off ($35->5 on steam). It’s the 5 episode series Telltale made recently. Not the remakes, but the new stuff. Can’t imagine it’s not worth $1/episode if you like that sort of thing.

The Men of War series in on sale for about another 10 hours, 75% off. Haven’t played them but they look like a half decent real time tactics game.

There are a whole lot of misc tycoon type games on GamersGate at 60% off. Not any big names though.

Just a heads up for those who created a GOG account before they left beta. GOG is giving out Jagged Alliance: Deadly Games for free. If you already had the game, you’re going to get some other game.
