So I hit rush.com and what do I see?
An announcement of a new CD coming out 6/29 and it’s 8 60s covers.
Wha?

Actually, it looks like a nice collection- two Yardbirds songs, two Buffalo Springfield songs, then a Who/Eddie Cochrane track, a Cream/Robert Johnson track, and a nice selection from Love. None of Love’s music has gotten much airplay in the past 20 years- it would be nice of “Seven and Seven Is” got some airplay, and sent some new fans back toward Arthur Lee.
For the band’s 30th anniversary, the boys thought it would be fun to travel back to the time when they were 13-14 years old and just learning how to play their instruments. These are some of the songs they, individually, spent hours and hours learning to play way back then.
I guess they just did this on a lark - got the idea, went to the studio and laid everything down in ten days. I’m looking forward to it
I’m looking forward to it, too. Of course, Rush could release 74 minutes of ANYTHING and I’d probably end up buying it.
Didn’t their first single have a couple of covers on it, too? I know they covered Buddy Holly’s “Not Fade Away”, and I thought another song as well.
Should be good.
The B-side of their debut single was a song called “You Can’t Fight It”. I don’t know who the original artist was. The interesting thing about that debut single is the fact that the musicianship - particularly Lifeson’s guitar playing - is waaaaay superior to that of the majority of rock songs I’ve heard from that era. It amazes me that these guys didn’t get picked up sooner. For a long time, I"ve been astonished by simply how much better Lifeson’s guitar tone was than that of other contemporary guitarists. There were already-famous, more financially-set artists out there who still sounded like they were playing through cheap beginner’s equipment, and Lifeson sounded like he was playing through top-of-the-line equipment.
Of course, my hero, Geddy Lee, sounds awesome on that debut single too.
I just saw them here in Pittsburgh on Memorial Day. Their cover of The Seeker rocked hard. I really enjoyed that, and I’m looking forward to the EP.
Yeah, I’m in the ‘I’ll buy anything’ camp, I admit.
I’ve got that somewhere. Probably in the attic.
