As you’ve probably heard, Obama recently decided to deploy 100 troops to central Africa in an effort to help take down the Lord’s Resistance Army, which has a well documented history of terrorizing “villagers in at least four countries with marauding bands that kill, rape, maim and kidnap with impunity.”
Here’s what Rush had to say on his show today about the LRA:
Now, I think there’s some good arguments to be made about how we shouldn’t be spending tax dollars on yet another military adventure. But pretending that these guys are defenders of human rights and all that is good about Christianity isn’t one of them.
But then again, in the minds of the right wing talkers these days, if Obama is for something, then it must be evil, and this is just another of many, many examples of that line of thinking
If you really believe Limbaugh believes any of that shit, you’re seriously deluded. What’s funny is how the (far) right in the US keeps digging, who would have thought, even five years ago, that someone would defend the LRA just to piss on the President’s shoes.
I think you nailed it right there. I seriously doubt Limbaugh had any clue who these guys were until he heard that Obama was sending 100 troops. As soon as that happened, it didn’t matter to Rush who they were, he was going to defend them solely because Obama was agin’ 'em. Hell, I bet Rush still doesn’t much about them besides the 30 seconds he spent scanning their manifesto.
They also claim that Nazis were an actual not-fake socialist party because they had socialist in their name. Strangely I never saw anyone try to defend East Germany or North Korea because they had Democratic Republic in their name, but they should have if they wanted to remain consistent.
Don’t blame Rush for this. If you’ve made it a point of accepting his pronouncements at face value, you are point of fact not interested in the unvarnished truth. But that would be difficult to pull off if you’re having a rational discourse. If you point out to people what the history of the LRA is about, most would be appalled. Instead, what Rush does is whip up anger and discontent. Logic and careful analysis go out the window. Your no longer interested in the facts, you want action now!
Rush is using a technique that is old as mankind itself.
Indeed. One would think that this is the point where even the likes of Rush Limbaugh would be ashamed. But the smart money is that they’re beyond shame.
And that’s King James English, and don’t you forget it!
Obama is sending our soldiers to attack poor black children? Can you imagine the outcry if a white President were to declare war on a bunch of poor black kids? Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton would be camped out in front of the White House demanding his head on a pike! But no, when it’s a BLACK LIBERAL doing it— sending armed soldiers to slaughter defenseless children— it’s just fine, nothing to see here!
(Is another bullshit angle I’m a bit surprised Rush didn’t pounce on)
I was tempted to post the same earlier. It would make more “sense” though it would be obvious partisanship, but as it has a “tu quoque” vibe, it would be nothing out of the extraordinary for US politics. Actually defending the LRA sounds completely crazy or just Limbaugh trying to get some attention and being very aware of what he does.
I’ve said it many times on this board, and I’ll say it again. These assholes would take a dump on the American flag and wipe their asses with the Constitution if they thought it would help them score some points about how evil Obama is.
My point is that Rush can lie, distort, manipulate all he wants within the bounds of free speech. It’s his right.
We, OTOH, have to make a choice in whether we accept fully, partially, or none of Rush’s version of events. It’s never been his responsibility–its always been ours.
Oh, christ, not the “it’s legal so it’s okay” canard.
I’m skeptical about whether he can lie, but that’s a fine line so whatever. He certainly is free to spout bullshit all he wants without fear of being arrested. He doesn’t get to be free from folks thinking he’s a shitstain for pandering to the people who love to eat his bullshit up. If enough people don’t like his bullshit, his show may get canceled. Happened to Imus. So yes, it is his fault he’s choosing to say bullshit, in the sense that the consequences for saying bullshit are on him. Fortunately for him, right now the primary consequence is a boatload of money.
I meant whether it’s legal for him to lie, seeing as you can sue for slander. But it’s tricky as hell to prove that, especially for public figures, so it’s not worth quibbling over.
