Ever wondered what Radiohead would sound like with a breathy female singer? Check out Alex Lifeson’s new band, Envy of None. The singer, Maiah Wynne, names them as an influence, and I think this really sounds like them.
I’m a Rush hater, but solely because of Geddy Lee’s voice.
So I bet I’d LOVE anything Alex did on his own.
But, still, the OP said not to click on this, so I didn’t.
I also found out that a Canadian program called “Murdoch Mysteries”, which I’ve heard of, is on Hulu, which I subscribe to. Geddy Lee has a cameo in the latest episode, playing a carriage driver named (what else?) Tom Sawyer. I’m going to check it out.
Is there a guitar in there somewhere?
Same here. And since I’m a rebel, I clicked on the link anyway, and the song is quite good!
I was about to make nearly that exact same comment. In fact, as I was growing up, there was a number of times I’d turn on the radio in the middle of a solo (drum or guitar usually) and stick around because I liked it and wanted to know who it was only to hear Geddy come shrieking back in with his vocals and I have to change it.
What’s odd is that it’s not even the tone of his voice, it’s just something about it that I can’t stand. People that know how much I dislike Rush are usually surprised to find out I like bands like Supertramp or Styx (and even Radiohead and Led Zeppelin can fall into that same category).
Not a Rush hater, but I do dislike Geddy Lee’s voice as well. Working Man is the only song I can actually listen to of his, his voice got annoying after that. Like fingernails running across a chalk board type annoying.
Which one? The Geddy Lee of the mid 70s (A Fairwell to Kings, Caress of Steel, Rush, Fly By Night) are much more screechy than late 80s on stuff (Signals, etc). I think Working Man is still screechy, too. He sings much more normal in the later stuff.
Yes, I couldn’t stand the early stuff either. He got better.
Yeah, I’m usually okay with a male falsetto, but there’s this whiney timber to Geddy Lee’s voice that I find viscerally unlikable.
Ditto. Axl Rose falls into the same category, for me. So whiny.
Maiah Wynne’s voice, otoh, is quite pleasant.
Of course, I didn’t click on this thread, so this post doesn’t exist.
FTR, I’ve been a Rush fan since 1978, when I was a 14-year-old GIRL, and I’ve never had a problem with Mr. Weinrib’s voice, but then again, that’s just me.
First I’ve ever heard of this.
But can you imagine if Alex came up to 3 unknows and said, “Hey? Wanna start a band?”
Me neither. Except maybe that last tour.
Last time I saw them was in 1994 (twice in one week, in different cities; long story behind that). I heard that their last few tours were instrumental-heavy for this reason.
I did that on the Power Windows tour. LA and San Diego. I lucked into good seats at The Forum, got cocktail service and a free program!
But if Geddy Lee Sings in a forest , and nobody hears,
Is the Maple syrup going to be ok ?
No, little Preaky, that’s how Maple Vinegar was invented.
Yeah his voice wasn’t good the last tour. He sounded fine on the album but can’t do it live anymore.
This song does nothing for me. I’ll give it a chance and listen some more. I really liked his solo album from years ago Victor. It was heavier than what Rush had been doing.
The only album that Rush put out that I got into is Permanent Waves.
Glad I clicked - really like what I’m hearing from Envy of None. Thanks for sharing!
