I’m in the process of re-reading Peter Mayle’s fictional work A Good Year. It’s an mild, unprovocative little tale of an Englishman inheriting a vineyard in Provence.
Coincidentally, I was just doodling about on the IMDB, and I see that Russell Crowe’s next vehicle will be a movie based on this book. It’s in production right now for a 2006 release. Now, this is interesting. The book’s protagonist is a completely inoffensive, rather submissive fellow and I just don’t see RC wimping himself down into the role. That is, unless the moviemakers rewrite the screenplay to be more edgy. There is a mystery involved in Mayle’s original story, but it’s scarcely edge-of-your-seat stuff.
Does anybody have more info on this upcoming movie? Will they transform a little romance+mystery into an edgy drama+mystery?
Huh. I haven’t read this Mayle. If it is anything like A Year in Provence, I thought John Thaw was perfect in the role. When he wasn’t playing Morse, of course. Then again, I am not a Russell Crowe fan. At all.
I’m surprised you feel that way given Crowe’s resume; he played a passive, scared Jeffrey Wigand in “The Insider,” and was hardly comative in “A Beautiful Mind.” He’s tried a lot of different roles.
Agreed. While in his personal life, he certainly the alpha male type, his movie roles are quite varied in their personalities. (I.E. A Beautiful Mind, The Insider) Hell, even in The Quick and the Dead, he was pretty passive through most of the movie.
