Russian ambassador assassinated in Turkey

According to the news from Spanish television, there are 9 dead and dozens injured.

Stark images of shooting of Russian ambassador.

Russia has first hand experience dealing with Muslim extremists in some of their territories. Hopefully, they’ll realize there was nothing Turkey could have done. Anybody can be radicalized without their colleagues or bosses knowing.

I’m sure we are in for a few tense days. I just hope Russia doesn’t over react.

Where’s the photos of the dead terrorist? If they show the Russian Ambassador’s body then it would be respectful to show his dead killer too.

Sorry, but WTF?

“I want a dead picture of the killer, it’s only respectful”?

What do you even mean by that?

ace, forgive me if I’m confusing you with someone else, but haven’t you said the media shouldn’t glorify nor give coverage to shooters? That they should be ignored by the media?

It’s in the OP. (a link I did not click on earlier).

Your point is what now?

The Russian Ambassador was shown in a tasteless way. Think of the guy’s family and the Russian public. If you show the victim then of course they should show the killer too. Or, don’t show either.

I’d prefer they didn’t show bodies, but that’s a decision the news editors have to make.

I don’t recall saying that. They have to report the crime. But don’t exploit it for ratings. There’s a fine balance in reporting vs exploiting a story.

There has been a recent thaw in the relationship between Russia and Turkey. The Russian government doesn’t seem to be putting any blame on the Turkish government for the assassination.

And, given how Ergodan tends to react to these things, there will be another roundup of anyone even suspected of dissent.

He was quite clearly NOT a terrorist, but an assassin. It takes more than being a Muslim who kills someone to be a terrorist.

Anyway, I’m wondering if he off’ed himself, otherwise they probably would have showed him get gunned down.

There’s a video of him shouting something about giving an “oath to Mohammed to fight jihad”, along with the usual “God is great” bullshit.

Also, looks like he was shot multiple times in the torso. So unlikely he did that to himself.

Yeah… bunch of bullet holes in the wall next to him too.

Russia’s Foreign Ministry calls it a terror attack. Putin is quoted on TV as saying…
“The only response we should offer to this murder is stepping up our fight against terror, and the criminals will feel the heat.”

Which is very good news. It’s reassuring this won’t trigger retaliation against Turkey.

Sounds like Aleppo is in for another round of bombing. Exellent news indeed.

Again, that doesn’t make him a terrorist. The same video shows him telling the other people that he meant them no harm and they are free to go.

Makes him a killer. A dead one at that.

I didn’t realize there was a tasteful way.

That was going to happen anyhow. The rebels and other armed factions refuse to surrender. So, there will be more air strikes until Assad’s forces secure the entire city. That’s basic military strategy in every war. “War is Hell”. William Tecumseh Sherman.

That’s a separate issue from the Ambassador’s murder. I’m very thankful Russia sees that this provocation was intended to create tensions between these two powers.

I think this is a semantic issue. I’d say somebody is an assassin if they’re killing somebody because of political actions they took personally. A terrorist is somebody who attacks people as symbolic representatives of an organization or country they oppose.

As far as I can tell at this point, Andrei Karlov wasn’t chosen because of his individual role in political events. He was targeted because he was the ambassador of Russia.

But he wasn’t just a “symbolic” representative. He was “the actual” representative of the country who this man apparently blamed for killing “his people” and he was specifically and exclusively targeted.

Since words have meanings, he was quite clearly an assassin.

If it turns out he was a member of some US backed “moderate”, then that would make thing very interesting very quickly.
