Russian Music

My friends and I are having a ‘Russian’ Party soon, and I’d love to hear recommendations for good Russian music.

Choral music, russian punk, it’s all fair game, but I’d especially be interested in any Soviet-style martial music if anyone knows any.

Fire away!

Here. And here. And here.

This is a good primer for Soviet-style popular/classical music, while an Amazon search for ‘russian orthodox’ will provide plenty of options down that route.

The Russian Easter Overture by Rimsky-Korsakov was always one of my favorite classical pieces.

Yuk.

One of the few composers I actively despise.

Gotta go with my Man Main Sergei Prokofiev: Symphonies 1 & 5, Lt. Kije, and Alexander Nevsky are all great places to start (not to mention Peter & the Wolf).

Not in the same league, but I too like Rimsky-Korsakov. This has most everything you’d need, over a nice range (though I’m a particular sucker for “Christmas Eve”).

Try Gogol Bordello for some russian-gipsy-whatnot flavoured punk rock.

No no no no no!!! One of the worst pieces ever written!!!

Oh, alright, if you have a problem with Shostakovich  (Peter & the Wolf, however…)

Now I’m going to be annoyingly nitpicky - I don’t think they’re got a Russian background, but rather an eastern European one.

The lead singer, guitarist & songwriter is Ukrainian, and the accordion & violin players are Russian. They also frequently include russian lyrics. I think they’re qualified for this thread, personally.

But for something more “russian russian”, try DDT.

Oh ! Forgot to add a terrific Moldavian band called Zdob zi Zdub, which has a terrific Russian-sang single called “Videli Noci”.

Russian Show Tunes!

This site doesn’t list the Russian version of the film “Chicago” which is amazing.
