This is just sad. I remember back in 1998, there was a healthy debate about whether he should be drafted ahead of Peyton Manning. Leaf ended up #2, behind Manning.
In spite of crashing and burning in the NFL, he made millions by virtue of that high draft pick. He must have serious mental problems to be reduced to this.
We Chargers fans prefer to refer to him simply as “He Who Shall Not Be Named”.
According to Wikipedia, he was dismissed from a college coaching job in 2008 for attempting to get one of his players to get him pain pills. He was then arrested in Texas in 2009 on similar charges (burglary and controlled substance charges).
He also apparently had surgery for a tumor on his brain stem last year. It really is sad to see, but the guy’s a mess.
Maybe he can start for an inmate team against the guards…

And he’s been arrested again in another burglary and being held for a probation violation from the case in Texas.
Wonder if we might see some sort of diminished capacity defense, considering the brain stem issue…

When I saw the headline for the second arrest, I thought the website had just been a little tardy posting the story of the first one. I couldn’t believe he was in trouble again already.
“WHO’S THERE?”
“nobody.”
“Hey, you’re Ryan Leaf!”
“No, I’m not.”
“Yeah, you are! Wow! Ryan Leaf, right here in my living room! Carrying off my Blu-ray player!”
“Uh…oh, this thing? Oh, I was just…uh…autographing it! Yeah, your wife e-mailed me, said you were a big fan, so I hopped on over to give you an autograph.”
“Wow, thanks!”
“No problem. Any time. Hey, you think I could go out the front door?”
“Sure.”
“Great.”

Even 36 year olds have parents, you know. I don’t know why the fuck it matters if they’re having a had time, but still.
