Saddam Hussein Captured!

They accept it more because the sons weren’t as recognizable as they had been in real life, owing to the firefight that took their lives. Saddam was captured without one shot being fired.

They allowed him to keep his moustache so that he’d be recognizable to everyone, specifically the Iraqi people. They wanted to lessen the possibility that people would cry foul.

About 400,000 dead Iraqis, murdered by Saddam, probably don’t have deep scruples about exactly how the U.S. arrived there to deliver their survivors from this brutality.

Saddam Hussein WAS a weapon of mass destruction.

Soon Mohammed Saeed al-Sahaf will announce the capture of “that villian Bush”.

Ah, off course. :smack:

I saw a conga line a little while ago!

mehitabel, there won’t be a “second inaugural”. If Bush is reelected, he merely stays in office, as with Clinton and Reagan. Presumably Grover Cleveland was inaugurated twice, but that’s because there was a separate administration between his two terms.

Or is this my day for getting whooshed?

We can only hope there is no Iraqi Jack Ruby, eh?

They would certainly have DNA by now from blood relatives-his sons, for example-which would help to identify him. But they could also get his DNA from articles that they know belonged to him…a hair brush, for instance.

I hadn’t thought of that. Thanks Laughing Lagomorph.

No, it was the Soviet flag. When the camera pulled back you could see that they were celebrating in front of the Iraqi Communist Party headquarters! It boggles the mind…

Yeah I went and looked again. Very definitely the Soviet flag. Oh, fantastic

Holy flerking schnit. Was NOT expecting to see that headline when I turned on CBS Sunday Morning. I had to flip channels to make sure it was real.

Who said that they are? These people are so used to being lied to that they don’t believe anything they can’t see with their own eyes. Maybe every time the U.S. thought we’d killed him for sure, a video would surface of him meeting with his advisors or in a huge throng of supporters in Baghdad.

Everyone here at work this morning is excited that it happened. Hopefully, it will cut down on the instability, and the Iraqi army will finally be created, to bring the troops back home. (The Iraqi aamy the Americans are creating just had 300 recruits resign Thursday. They were all former regime soldiers.)

There’ll be a second inauguration because he has to take the oath of office for the new term, and would Washington pass up a chance to have a parade and take the day off work and create general craziness for all and sundry (particularly the latter)?

But all that aside, WE GOT THE BASTARD! Yeeeeeehah!

Hell.Fucking.Yeah.

First of all, just let me add Woooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!

Second, concerning …

I think you’re reading too much into it. There are a lot of Iraqis waving red flags of ALL sorts. I think the significance is the color of the flag – although the significance escapes me. Perhaps someone else can elaborate? Anyway, the only reason they seem to be waving old soviet flags is simply because they’re red, like the rest …

…d’oh…

Goodbye, Saddam! Don’t let the doorknob hit you on the butt on your way to hell!!!

As for DNA testing, if they took samples from his sons, they could check for a match. That’d be kinda conclusive. 'Cause I remember hearing that Saddam had several doubles he used to guard against assassination when he was in power. I can’t imagine those doubles wanting to continue being human targets after Saddam’s fall, but it does the possibility.

NBC reported that he was found with $750,000 in $100 bills - good ol’ USA dollars no less…

Well personally speaking I always thought he was a regular guy, y’know like one of the men, a decent sorta bloke that would stand his round, pass out his ciggies, take the dog for a walk, go to the football game on a Sat or Sun, cheer with the rest of us, eat a hot dog or burger and chew the fat after the game, treat his wives as equals…a real nice guy.

What? what?

I’m only kidding y’know, he was/is an asshole and was found in something that looked like one.

Thousands of people have been given the death penalty by the American government as well, don’t forget. Should Bush therefore be deposed and his government replaced by default?

I’m not saying Saddam was a good ruler - I believe that he was a tyrant and that his capture is good for Iraq and for the rest of the world. But it scares me a little that as soon as the symbol of ‘the enemy’ is captured, we all forget why he was the enemy in the first place.

Regardless of Bush’s new reasons for war, he originally claimed Iraq had stores upon stores of WMD, which was a lie. The President can’t simply be allowed to claim a country is a danger to the USA, using the ‘terrorists’ buzzword, and wipe it off the map - switching his reasons for doing so multiple times along the way. Even if he got it right this time, he may not next time.

I think Saddam’s capture is wonderful news, but I can’t deny that the reactions to it I’ve seen both here and in other places frighten me a little.
