So the official CIA report is finally in, and yet another source shows the Bush administration for the pack of lying empire builders they are. No point here, just venting.

Yeah, but Saddam *wanted * them! Boyyyyyyyyy, the world is a safer place with him behind bars…provided the Baaths don’t regain control and release hime before an “axident” happens to him in the next 3 weeks.
I love the way the report wraps up with, “…so you see, boys and birls, we really did do the right thing by removing Saddam.”
Spare some wrath for those parties now energetically revising their slogans for why the war was still imperative?
On a less cynical day I might acknowledge the CIA for has finally, belatedly showing a bit of independence. Not today though, it is an arm of the US govt in an election month.
Not today, this is the bit I was expecting:
Column A: claims susceptible to objective evidence.
Column B: claims that cannot be independently verified.
Column A: void.
Column B: borne out completely.
Chefguy, why do you hate America?
Damn! I’ve been caught out as an evil-doer. Oops…hold on…somebody’s at the door…

That’s the bit I really didn’t get when I was watching this on TV. Even though they announced that there were never any WMD to find, they spent so much time on the guys opinions of what Saddam might have been thinking about doing after sanctions were lifted.
Afterwards on the news, the UK spokesperson used that part of the report to argue that Blair’n Bush were totally justified in their invasion of Iraq. Unless the guy writing the report was a mindreader, or could at least produce credible interviews with Saddam talking freely about these ‘plans’, surely that part of the report was mere speculation and hearsay at best.
It would never pass Brutus’s ‘cite’ test here on SDMB, for instance.
At this point you can’t even say this undercuts the reasoning behind the war. This is old news. I guess it will make the administration’s claims that the invasion was necessary seem more out of touch with reality, but even then it’s only a matter of degree.
If you apply this logic of “well, Saddam wanted to have WMDs” then you could also say that I’m justified in beating the snot out of the kid next door because I suspect he “wanted” to break into my house. I don’t have any proof, of course, but I did see him glance into my front window the other day… and my third cousin twice removed heard that a friend of the neighbor’s kid heard the kid say he liked the looks of our TV. Oh…what?..that’s illegal? Pffft! …apparently not! Besides, the kid plays loud music in his car and we all (the whole neighborhood-including the polish guy on the end of the street, honest!) agreed we’d be better off without him.
…oh yeah, I forgot. If I happen to trample the kid’s grandma and baby sister on my way to beating him up, that’s ok too…collateral damage you know.
Yep, waiting for Tony Blair to find out that, in this very country, we have unrepentent murderers and paedophiles and the like sitting in jail. Wouldn’t you know, they want to kill people and abuse kids and the like. Of course, they can’t, because we’ve got them locked up. But, surely we would be justified in dropping a large bomb on the prison? Now admittedly, this would also kill all the other prisonners, the people who work in the prison and some innocent people who live nearby. But it’d get the job done.
Nah, they were supporters and insurgents. You gotta beak some eggs… collateral damage…fog of war… blah… blah… blah… freedom hating townspeople. Besides, Rush will spin it for us.
OK, this is the first and last time I’ll ever post this:
R. O. F. L. M. A. O. ! ! ! !
My sincerest appologies.
It all kind of fits somehow. I mean Bush is a fundie. Don’t they believe that you are committing a sin if you think about committing adultery?
Yeah they do. As soon as you even think about it, bam, you’re guilty. Bush is afe, though, he never had a single thought of any kind. Heaven is sure gonna be lonely for him
Do puppets go to heaven? Seriously though, if heaven existed, and if, by some chance, they got admission, they’d have to keep Bush and Cheney in isolation to keep them from seeing their thousands of innocent victims - who just might be feeling some righteous anger.
I heard on one of the morning shows this morning that the White House is still insisting that there was a clear danger and that Saddam had the capability to produce WMD. Lauer was interviewing a former inspector (can’t remember his name) and brought up this latest Bush spin. His reply: “Well, it just goes to show that denial isn’t just a river in Egypt.”
Does anyone else find it slightly inconsistent that we had a guy who apparantly wanted to produce WMD, who apparantly
and who we know had possessed WMD at some point in the past.
What a triumph for the UN inspections and sanctions regime that he didn’t possess any at all…
I wonder if the CIA website uses spyware? Just a thought . . .
The UN (is that like, the United Nations)?.. they are so…oh…um…irrelevant. It would be like maybe wanting, oh, I don’t know, a “Global test” maybe? Ridiculous concept! And to think the UN might be effective? To make me laugh!!
Doesn’t a justification this lame open us to charges that we invaded Iraq because we’re a nation of fraidy cats who can’t tolerate the existence of anyone who dislikes us?
Same 'ol shit. The admin will say although he didn’t have WMD, he was a threat to our country.
Without WMD, I’ve always wondered what specifically made him a threat.
