Omg! The beginning cutscene of Saints Row IV had horrible graphics… i mean, horrible. Im not even kidding. But the story was alright. Anyone agree?
This is the lowest common denominator compromise necessary to bring it to the generations-old hardware of the XBox 360 and PS3. If you’re playing on PC you’ll eventually be able to mod it to look however you please.
Additionally, as I understand it, Saints Row 4 started its life as DLC for Saints Row 3, so it’s not surprising that it’s not much advanced over the previous title.
But, with a cutscene, that shouldn’t be a problem. There’s no reason for the cutscene to be done in engine.
That said, no, I didn’t notice it–although I admit I only saw it at 720p. And that’s on a let’s play, not on my computer, where I would have watched it at 480p, most likely. (Upgrading my graphics card just isn’t in the cards right now.) And there’s no telling what compression does to the video quality.
Yeah, according to my coworker who worked on SR3, SR4 uses the exact same engine. And it’s looking dated.
That said, I still want to grab it when the price goes down a bit (and I’ve finished all the DLCs for Dishonored).
I just finished it and I think it’s in this odd situation of being both better than and not as good as Saints Row The Third at the same time.
I love the fact the default male character is essentially a slightly less narcissistic Sterling Archer, but the “Alien invasion and most of the game takes place in a Matrix-like computer simulation” aspect didn’t grab me the way SR3’s story did. However, I think the “Fuck it, we’re not even going to pretend to this seriously” approach is definitely the right one and the superpowers and crazy Alien weapons (Dubstep Gun for the wub-wub-wub-wub-win! :D) are awesome fun.
The first DLC for the game is based on the canned final DLC for SR3 so that could be fun, and I’ll be interested to see what they do with Saints Row V given they’ve both limited their options and allowed themselves to do whatever they want at the same time. I noticed the engine etc was unchanged from the previous game, which didn’t bother me that much (I don’t expect every computer game that comes out to tax my system to the very limits of its processing and rendering capabilites) but I can see how that might disappoint a few people.
Overall I enjoyed SRIV and while I doubt I’ll replay the main story again, I see a lot of sandbox potential for just running around and having a good time - which is what more computer games should be about, IMHO
That’s the exact same situation Saints Row The Third was in, so that’s not surprising. I only bought SR3 at ~80% off, and the dubstep gun isn’t enough to make me buy SR4. Maybe, if the modding tools are up to scratch, I’ll buy SR4 at ~80% off to cannibalise for content, but the entire premise of the game is an immediate deal breaker for me.
At first I hated the premise but I got bored and bought it. I absolutely loved this game, much more so than I did the third (the second is one of my favorite games ever).
The whole simulation thing actually makes more sense: how else can I kill over 400 pilots in one city?
Personally, I would have liked a bigger deal to be made of the “Being President of America” thing - it would have been nice to have a couple of missions as President Smackdown before [del]Killface[/del] Zinyak & Co showed up.
