Sam Stone believes Trump's tweets

Stop stealing DrDeth’s shtick.

You are being way too courteous.

For all the notion that the SDMB is a “liberal leaning site”, it is just south of Nixon and largely north of Bill Clinton on most issues. In fact, I witness many people bending over backward to give @Sam_Stone the benefit of the doubt that he is being forthright, and then when he makes it utterly clear that he will be as disingenuous as necessary to make the point about how persecuted he or his designated adorant is, he’s still given every opportunity to consider his position to which his response is to claim unilateral and overwhelming persecution.

@Sam_Stone is the bigger kid who bullies other, smaller kids into giving him their lunch money, and then the one day that one if his victims gets up enough courage to bloody his nose, claims that the attack came out of nowhere and he did nothing whatsoever to cause it. He is the protagonist of a rejected Judy Blume novel who never realizes that he needs to grow up and stop treating people as singular objects to satisfy his ego. Reading his posts in the voice of Jordan Peterson gives exactly the right tenor of alternating attacker-and-victim mentality.

Stranger

I know this is the Pit, but, anonymous or not, cyber-bullying is still something to take seriously. Whatever the source of the disagreement, or which side people are on, I hate to see things get this personal and vitriolic.

And if you did I would come to your defense there, because I don’t believe people deserve to be harassed and mocked simply because they hold a minority position.

If you go back and look, you will find that when people on the left here have been unfairly attacked I have never joined in, and often come to their defense - even people who have attacked me in the past. It’s about civil behaviour in the face of positions you don’t like or don’t agree with.

The left is the large majority here, as you say. All the more reason to tolerate the few people still here from the right who can offer a different point of view. Or would you rather live in an echo chamber?

I get accused a lot here of living in a right wing bubble. Yet here I am, taking abuse from the left because I try NOT to be in a bubble. How many of you do the same? Sure, I could run off to some conservative board where I’d get lots of back pats, but there’s entirely too much of that political sorting going on already, and it makes the world a worse place, Plus, here I can learn how the left thinks, maybe have my ideas challenged, and maybe challenge some of yours.

Diversity is a good thing, don’t you ageee? And of I can take the heat and pile-ons I get from offering my opinions, don’t you think you can listen to the occasional opposing view without blowing a gasket?

I prefer that to your vision of a left-wing club that sees anyone from the right as some kind of gate crasher who deserves what they get.

This is not accurate. Sam did not report the posts and he was the one being attacked. Others were being irresponsible.

Too many posters get very aggressive in the Elongated Muskrat Threads.

I’m probably going to move to push these into the pit for now on as they end up closed as they belong there.

The behavior towards the few Musk defenders was pretty shitty.

The opinion you have of Rachel Carson is still shitty, it allows you to keep the false idea that environmentalists are mass murderers. Not a good idea to never deal with that poison from right wing sources (by never acknowledging how wrong you were many times in the past when evidence was showed to you) when claiming to be open to other’s ideas.

You’re not being unfairly attacked simply because you hold a minority position.

You’re being justifiably attacked because you lie. Constantly.

And then you lie about why you’re being attacked.

He was originally pitted because being obstinate about his positions was (and still is) his MO. Are there a lot of knee jerk and unfair attacks? Yes. That is pretty much a feature of any online discussion forum with any volume. But Sam uses that as a cloak to stay obstinate.

If he didn’t double down on every dumb take this thread would be a lot shorter.

Just to be clear, by “this stunt” you mean people pointing out dumb and hateful shit you yourself said?

If someone quoting you or discussing what you yourself said sounds like an attack, maybe you should take a step back and try to understand why it is that you keep saying stuff that’s so odious it sounds like an attack just to describe it.

It reminds me of all the calls about “media bias” that got thrown around when the media simply accurately reported real things that Trump did.

They thought it was bias, because they were supposed to report what Trump meant to say, or report on stuff that he probably would say.

There was bias because the media reported on what Trump actually did, instead of what he promised he’d do.

Ayup, back in 2006 I thought (and not unreasonably, IMHO) that the casual use of “88” in usernames and similar was more ambiguous than it can be considered now, sixteen years further along in the rise of the alt-right.

Even back then, though, I didn’t try to argue that only “Nazi hunters” or obsessive paranoid leftists could possibly be expected to be aware of the phenomenon.

Heh, join the club!

The key to not being in a “bubble” is not merely being willing to take abuse from those who disagree with you. It’s being willing to take in information that you didn’t previously have.

You’ve spent considerable time for more than two decades on a messageboard where during that time there have been many references to, and several prolonged discussions of, this “88” phenomenon you say you’ve never heard of. Most of them in board forums that you frequent, several in threads that you’ve actually posted in. But apparently you never managed to become aware of it.

And then when it’s pointed out to you that this phenomenon you say you’ve never heard of is actually quite well known, instead of saying “huh yeah guess I missed that”, you double down by suggesting that the reason you didn’t know about it is simply because you’re not obsessed with Nazis and not a paranoid lefty. Thus reframing your bizarrely persistent ignorance on the subject as some kind of mark of virtue.

Damn, Sam. I’m reluctantly somewhat impressed by your exceptional ability to carry your bubble around with you even as you interact with people outside it. But being genuinely willing to “have [your] ideas challenged” requires more than just hanging around many people who disagree with you, or even putting up with their occasional exasperated flaming of you. It requires actually listening to their dissenting views and acknowledging it when facts contradict your preconceptions.

AFAICT you pretty much never get Pitted here just for an expression of a view that many other Dopers disagree with. You get Pitted when you go on for post after post reiterating your view while stubbornly waving away or ignoring other posters’ rebuttals of it.

Your idea of discussing controversial issues seems to be like a political candidate “debate”, where you get a turn to say what you think, and then I get a turn to say what I think, and then you say what you think some more, and so on, with neither candidate constructively engaging with the other’s positions. That’s not actually providing ideological “diversity”.

As a long time lurker and infrequent poster I do remember the whole dust up over Huerta88 and I’m fairly certain that incident was where I learned the whole 88 = Heil Hitler thing. Prior to that I probably would have just assumed that a username with 88 in it was a back to the future reference. Yes I’m a nerd.

Of course unlike some other posters I took that new bit of information as an opportunity to learn something new. Not an opportunity to double down on my own ignorance and accuse others of obsessive behavior.

In with a “holy shit” before all things Sam-related get locked.

Closed since the OP is no longer with us.

And he’s back, so here we are.
