Sampiro Speaks! And Sings! My first youtube video

I just have to say Jon that I’ve always thought “Lorena” was a beautiful song and I love it even more now that I hear you singing it. I’ve listened to it twice. I love your voice!

I have to agree - your character comes across - in a good way!

Or, if they ever re-cast MST3K, you’d be great choice for either Tom Servo or Crow.

Seriously, what’s with the accent? I thought you were from Alabama. Is the accent a put on? Are you just incredibly pretentious? Are you an immigrant? What’s up.

You have a great stage voice, by the way. Have you ever done theater?

  1. You look almost exactly like I thought you would, and there is only the one chin.

  2. You sound a bit more Brit than I thought, but I always heard you in a Mid-Atlantic accent, except when you go into your down home schtick.

  3. You know some mighty depressing songs.

Except when deliberately doing accents (singing Oliver or the Pentecostal cadence) it’s my real voice, as the few Dopers I’ve met can verify. People I grew up with STILL asked me where I grew up.

I think what some interpret as an accent is speed. As my students tell me constantly, I speak very fast. An Indian sociology professor whose specialty is sociolinguistics and whose class I took once said that my voice was unusual because there’s almost NO accent there.

I’m most often compared in voice to David Ogden Stiers, who grew up in Peoria IL. In looks I’m usually compared to Peter Ustinov by those who know who he was; to others it’s “A fat Kenneth Branagh but with lips”. A friend says my mafia name would be Johnny “The Goat” Vibrato because I can’t sing without overloading it with vibrato.

Your performance was nice but Oliver nailed his part perfectly. Has he worked professionally?

That settles it. When you do finally write that book, I am waiting for the audio version. Could you maybe do one more where you imitate your father?

I think Eddie on the show Frasier is the closest to proof of the existence of the supernatural, because anyone who’s ever had a Jack Russell knows that they are easy to train only if what you’re training them to do is what they want to do at that precise moment anyway. I can only assume with Eddie/Moose they used some sort of heathen magic or electrodes and remote controls. I honestly think if Cesar Milan came to work with Ollie he’d change the name of his show to “The Dog Beater”.

I still can’t decide if Ollie is the stupidest or smartest dog I’ve ever had, but he is totally the most untrainable. The fact he’s also the friendliest is his saving grace, which also seems to be a breed characteristic.

Far and away, the most disturbing part of this was hearing your voice and finding out that vocally, you’re a dead ringer for a former co-worker of mine. Yeah…the one who started that thread. Absolutely uncanny.

So, other than now having to view you in an incredibly suspicious light, it was quite entertaining.

You can click the mute button on YouTube, but that doesn’t mean you won’t still hear the lambs…

My Gawd, that voice!

Okay, I see I’m several posts too late to make that original, but yeah, I pictured (heard?) you as sounding a bit more southern and less British.

I am hearing the Stiers but not seeing the Ustinov (and I do know what he looked like). I’m getting somebody else, but can’t quite come up with it yet . . .

I love Lorena. Taking requests?

I don’t see Ustinov, either and I like him as an actor… I see more of a not so gaunt Donald Sutherland, in a weird way. I also think you sound similar (faintly, more baritone) to David Sedaris, another Southerner who doesn’t sound molasses drenched.

Oliver is a Jack Russell? Really? :dubious:

His mother was. His father was an itinerant day labor who abandoned them before he was born.

Dude. Awesome voice. And you’re handsome. And you sound almost as English as I do.

If I were in the gays, I’d totally go for you.

I am going to go back and re-read every one of your posts with an entirely different voice and cadence and accent. Holy crap, what an awesome speaking voice and singing.
I strongly suspect Oliver is actually Edgar Bergen to your Mortimer Snerd. It is the only way I can wrap my miniscule brain around this ephiphany.

sighs, eyelashes fluttering Now that’s a real man’s voice…

He just looked so much bigger than the Jack Russell’s I’ve seen. Blame his lack of intelligence on his dad… :stuck_out_tongue:

What they said, mostly. I can definitely hear the Stiers. And, like Sigmagirl, I’m reminded of someone else, but can’t place him…

And Hal’s revelation lends a whole new sound to that thread.

All highly entertaining! You should definitely make more.
