It was the screening. The playback would stutter and freeze occasionally. It was annoying but not so annoying as to make people leave. They did not have this problem with the kung fu snippets in the session before.
They also had trouble with the subtitles in the beginning. They did not have them on. The first about 10 minutes don’t have any dialog so the operators thought things were OK and went outside for signing and questions and had to be found again.
How was the Friday Con? Anyone see Samuel L. Jackson? I couldn’t believe I missed it, should’ve looked up the schedule and preregistered for Friday! :smack:
Another :smack: – I waited til now to try to register online for Saturday, and now the site says online registration is closed. Will I have to wait in a ridiculous line all the way to Old Town to get in now? The line I waited in for day-of registration was pretty freakin’ insane back in 2003. Should I just wait for Sunday?
Looks like I’m not eligible for the military discount like I thought I was, so I’m going on Sunday if at all–can’t afford to drop $30 on one event like that, as I’m trying to save up to move out. The programming will suck (nothing on Sunday sounds interesting to me), but at least I can hang out in the exhibit hall, talk to my favorite webcomic artists, maybe catch a little anime and soak up a little of the festive atmosphere. Sorry silenus. Maybe we can all catch brunch on Sunday if you’re still going.
Yep, I went to the panel for “Snakes on a Plane.” Samuel L. Jackson was hilarious and very cool.
The chief snake handler for the movie was there with a few of the snakes that were used during the filming. He had two pythons, one an albino. After those an anaconda was brought out. He said it was about 9-feet long, but would grow to be about 22-feet long; four of his assistants were needed to handle it.
But, the real highlight of the panel was that they showed the world premier of a 10-minute clip from the middle of the film! (Please don’t be jealous. ) One word to describe that clip is: INTENSE! I was very impressed by it.
Your other question - Sorry, but I couldn’t speak to how bad the registration line might be on Sunday.

I think that’s a feature that’s on the Serenity DVD…
Btw, SciFi (channel) was handing out cards about a Tom Mignola (Hellboy) comic they’re going to air called “Screw-On Head”. You can watch the whole feature on SciFi’s website, which I did, and it was really good and quirky. A little at-home Con appetizer :-). Go to www.scifi.com/pulse. The pilot debuts on the 27th. No, I don’t work for them, I just thought Dopers might like it
Having just returned from the Saturday session, I take back what I wrote previously about crowd levels the previous two days. The amount of people there today was VERY clearly much larger then Thursday and Friday!
I was happy to get to one really good panel before the crowds left me feeling exhausted. It was a fun presentation by the artist Shag about his life and how his artistic style developed over the years.
Lots of people in full body makeup as well. Mostly well done.
The Battlestar Galactica panel was great. It was the first con Edward James Olmos had ever been to, and you could tell he was blown away by the reception they got. You could also tell that Moore had given them a talking-to before the panel about revealing any spoilers for the next season. Ed kinda ignored that, and said “This is the darkest television I have ever seen, much less been a part of.” The general (fake) running jokes were that Chief Tyrol is going to bite it in the first part of the season, and that Baltar is really a Cylon. They did confirm that the Cylons are going to box a model we have seen. They also confirmed that there is going to be an arc that takes place on a Cylon Base Star, where they all run around naked. But Lucy Lawless shut us down by announcing “No nips.”
In other news, it looks like the Richard Donner recut of Superman II is going to be great. They showed some footage, and it looked really good. Donner was stoked to have done it, and said that the editor got it just right.
I also discovered that DC artist Michael Turner modeled the face of the new Supergirl after his Mom. She was at a booth, and the counterperson at ViewAskew pointed her out when I bought a Supergirl t-shirt. There’s the makings of a therapy session there, methinks!
Adam Baldwin has put all of his Firefly scripts up for auction for charity. They are all signed by cast and crew, and will benefit a good cause. One a week goes on ebay, next week through October.
All in all, a good con. Friday’s crowd stunk, literally. Saturday the line for single-day passes stretched from the doors of the convention center all the way to the far end of Seaport Village. If you decide to go next year, spring ofr a 4-day pass early…it’s cheaper and easier all around.
Mission accomplished (Saturday). It took a couple visits to the booth to coincide with when Becky was there, but I finally got to see her and ask the carnival question.
She was understandable surprized, and thought it was awesome. I had to have her explain what the carnival thing was about (she never did give me a definitive “yes” or “no”, BTW). Fun stuff.
Haha Oh man, I owe you. I just saw an email she sent me a few days ago “Did you pay some random asian guy off the interweb to ask me to play carnival? haha”, I don’t remember the last time I laughed so hard.
She’s a cool chick, I’m happy you got to see her. Did she sketch you anything?
No, I didn’t ask her to sketch anything. They did ask me how I learned of her and the carnival thing, so I told them about the SDMB. They still weren’t exactly sure, but it did narrow it down to a couple suspects for them. I couldn’t tell them any more than that (I forgot what your handle was).
It was worth it to see the shock and surprize on her face when I asked the carnival thing.
