I like to wear sandals and for esthetic reasons I do not wear socks, although there is a cliché that people of “germanic” origin wear shorts, sandals and socks
Anyway, how do you manage not to sweat when you are not wearing socks? There seems to be some kind of special chemical reaction which only takes place when my feet touch shoes or sandals directly.
Needless to say that I already tried various kinds of sandals…
I wear sandals (without socks, of course) whenever I can and my feet hardly sweat . They do, however, start sweating quite a bit if I wear loafers or any closed shoes (without socks). Guess it comes down to the climate, or the fact that some people just perspire more than others.
after you shower, every day, and have dried yourself (thoroughly), I suggest you take some Tea Tree oil (essential oil, aromatherapy. Most pharmacies would stock it, by now), and rub it all over your feet, especially the soles and inbetween your toes.
What makes your sweat smell, is a bacteria that sits on your skin. Tea Tree will kill them off.
No more smelly feet.
it works, believe me.
Ive done it.
Your feet ALWAYS sweat. You don’t notice it when you’re wearing socks because your socks are absorbing the sweat.
Wearing socks with sandals is exactly the same as wearing a T-shirt and shorts under a bikini. It’s ridiculous. You are a wise person to avoid this sartorial offense.
Man, my feet just sweat. Anythime I wear sandals I get a slimey funk going on. Not so much the smell, just crud on my feet/sandals. And I ain’t wearing socks (well maybe in 30 more years I’ll get some black dress socks to wear under my sandals)
When buying Teva’s (or any sandals) look for the ones with smooth bottoms.
The part of the sandal that your foot rests on often has patterns of grooves carved in it. I find that these just give the foot spooge nicks and crannies to get caught in and result in a terrible smell. I know folks who go so far as to put the sandals in the freezer overnight to try and get rid of it.
The sandals that have no cracks or grooves in the design don’t give off such a bad stink.
Depends on where you live, actually. Here in the Pacific Northwest, socks with Tevas or Birkenstocks is practically the norm (although an earth tone is more acceptable than white or shudder black). Many people wear them year-round, and you certainly can’t go sockless here for very much of the year or you’d freeze your poor tootsies off (“tough guys” and teens excepted, of course).
And I’m curious, RickJay - do feet sweat even when they are so cold they turn white (or blue)? I’m hypothyroid, and my feet are always like icicles.
I’ll have to make this my mantra next time I’m sitting in my bathroom applying antibiotic ointment to the blisters I got from wearing sandals without socks on a hot day and the tops of my feet got sweaty creating just the wrong sort of friction…
Get a pair of Birkenstocks. I have been wearing nothing by Birkenstocks every summer for the past 9 years, without socks. If your feet sweat, it’s kind of absorbed by the soft leather/cork sole, and yet they never smell. At least in my experience. I have had one particular pair of Birk sandals for about 6 years. I’ll wear them all summer long, and they never ever smell bad. I don’t have to wash them either. And they’re the most comfortable things on the planet. In fact I am wearing another pair of Birks now, been wearing them all day–well actually every day since it’s been warm, and I just put one up to my nose and took a whiff; all I smelled was the leathery smell from the sole. They smell almost brand new still!
I frequently wear sandals, and never with socks, so I know all about the Sandal Foot Funk. In fact, my best friend told me last week that she thinks I take “shuffling strides” and that it isn’t particularly flattering.
I had to explain to her that it’s the stylish and supremely impractical sandals I wear that cause this condition; put briefly, whenever I wear sandals, my feet get all sweaty, to the point that unless I walk carefully, and a bit flat-footed, the sandals are in imminent danger of sliding/flying off my feet. I also added that surely I’m not the only girl who makes sacrifices for cute shoes? HELLO.
Having said all that, when I think about it I sprinkle baby-powder on my feet and sandals to cut back on this condition, and it works to an extent at keeping my shoes on my feet where they belong.
The only problem is that sometimes the sweat overcomes the baby powder, and then you get this Sweaty Baby Powder Funk that’s almost worse than good ol’ Sandal Foot Funk. (Anyone who’s ever met a stripper straight out of work will recognize the smell of Sweaty Baby Powder Funk, since they douse themselves in it to cut back on sweat while performing. Ahh, the things you learn when behind a bar.)
Til someone can make my feet stop sweating, I will have to continue taking off my sandals underneath the table/in the car until I have to wear them…which is the only way I know of to keep them toesies dry and slip-free.
I wear sandals most of the year. Over time I’ve learned not to tolerate sandals that don’t work. If they rub or flop around or get sweaty it’s out they go! So maybe it’s the type of sandals you’re wearing and you just need to keep looking. Sandals with wide straps that really grip your feet are practically shoes. Strappy sandals would promote more air circulation and therefore cut down on sweatiness problems. Since it’s summer you have an excuse to sit down, slip them off and let them have a mini-dry out.
One of my ex-students once told me that she was advised to apply deoderant/anti-perspirant to her feet every night to keep moisture to a minimum on hikes. It worked for her and if it’s good enough for the Marines…
