Sanderista primaries out 10-term Dem Congressman

Why are we talking about Clay? The context seems to be AOC’s touting an alternative (Cori) to Clay? And the futility of Cori’s bid?

But what is the point you’re making? AOC should humble herself, rooting only for favorites? ( If she agrees that Trump is likely to be re-elected should she root for him too? :stuck_out_tongue: )

If you have a problem with inexperienced politicians that get into public office and spend all their time hurling insults and making ill-thought out policy instead of taking the time to observe experienced politicians and learn from them, well…I think Alexandria O-C is the wrong target.

While it’s not quite a Sarah Palin facepalm, it’s amazing that Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez wasn’t better prepared to answer questions about Israel and Palestine. The Democratic Socialists are well known as supporting BDS (Boycott, Divest, Sanctions)

Here’s the video from PBS. I’m trying to find a transcript or a link to a non right wing source as well.

Ouch. We found her weakness: questions not about how exciting her victory was. She’s much better with her lists of free stuff.

She scrubbed her website of anti war material right before her victory. Maybe she wanted to signal she would play ball with party leadership. They will not abide anti war voices.

The Democrats have found their Sarah Palin!

The whole video (available here on The Forward’s site as well aint bad, and puts her in the same space that many American Jews occupy on the subject, a space that is not sympatico with the Far Left or the Far Right.

I wouldn’t look to a young progressive for detailed foreign policy briefs but compared to Palin she’s at least Colin Powell. The fact that she recognizes she has something to learn and expresses a willingness to do so alone puts her in a way above the likes of that.

The problem is that she’s a member of the DSA, yet anytime she’s pressed on a DSA position she moves into the Democratic mainstream. She needs to either be DSA or renounce her membership.

I am sure she will renounce her DSA membership right after Donald Trump figures out that he doesn’t really represent Republican ideals at all and renounces his membership in that party.

The fate of Israel does not hinge upon the opinions or memberships of a (soon to be) junior congressperson from the United States. Even if she was all about the BDS movement, Israel would carry on. Israel has been called worse things by much more important people and Israel is not known for bowing to outside pressure.

All true, but let’s be clear: her beliefs are built on a foundation of sand. She’s not yet sure what she believes, since her beliefs aren’t based on any sort of knowledge. In that respect, perhaps Donald Trump IS a better comparison for her than Sarah Palin.

She did say one thing very insightful though: Millenials are embracing socialism because they’ve never seen a good economy in their lifetimes. But we’re starting to finally see one now, with wage growth and everything. If Millenials start making some money and having families that will change them politically.

She’s quit every government job she’s ever had after corrupting it?

She’s 28. She’s not running for president or governor or even mayor. She’s running for Congress. It’s a great thing when young and excited people run for Congress, even if they’re not very polished and need to study up. They’ve got plenty of time to do so, and Congress is a reasonable place to start doing so.

I see a lot of linking but nobody has come forward to explain why Ocasio-Cortez was necessarily ‘wrong’ about anything she has said. Israel has occupied territories not recognized as theirs under international law since 1967 - that is a fact. It is also a fact that Israel uses brutal, terroristic warfare and justify it by claiming that they’re defending themselves against terrorism. I wish more Democrats, more everyone, would stop confusing rightful criticism of the excesses of militant Zionism with anti-Judaism. They’re not the same. I admit that I didn’t watch the video, but I’ve seen nothing - nothing at all - that she said that was wrong in her characterization of Israel, particularly under their criminal gangster boss, Benjamin Netanyahu.

We’re not seeing much wage growth, and if anything, we’re about to see runaway inflation that will strip away any gains that we get from the growth of wages, which have been depressed for a good decade or more. What we’ve really seen is that the wealthiest in our society disproportionately gain wealth and income during economic expansion, and the working class and poor lose the most during recessions. And the tax cut that passed last December all but ensures that this trend will continue. Worse, it has endangered retirement for future generations.

What Ocasio-Cortez is talking about is something that is going to catch on, and that is the idea that redistribution of wealth isn’t ‘socialism’, but a fairer, more enlightened form of social capitalism. And it is the one sure way to ensure that both future generations continue to support economic freedom and political democracy. You cannot have a society that is truly free without some level of economic parity.

And every candidate needs to agree with every item in the party’s platform or drop out …

I don’t agree with many of her positions and think some are just unrealistic but I think she articulates them well and coherently.

I’m sure she will carefully and thoughtfully consider your views about what a Democrat should do.

Really? As I recall, in 1967, Israel was attacked, not the aggressor.

From what I can tell, OC admits to Hoover that she’s “not an expert” on the topic and right wing places are running with it as “LOLOLOL She said she has NO IDEA what she’s talking about!!! rofl!!!”

…what does this even mean?

How would this even work?

If she doesn’t know what she believes, how do any of us know if we have actual beliefs?

When do we gain enough knowledge to be allowed to have beliefs?

Would you care to quantify this statement?

I like Alexandria, but for me the excitement is not about some special lady with a silver bullet on a charging stallion named ‘Trigger’, nor on her possible Presidential candidacy in 2052. It was her electoral success, rather than any special personal genius, that is so inspiring.

Having said that, Ms. Ocasio-Cortez seems quite intelligent to me. She isn’t quick on her feet to answer an unexpected question, but I can sympathize with that! (I was very expert in certain fields but often became tongue-tied when suddenly called upon.)

Not quite a a Sarah Palin facepalm? Sure you’re not going out on a limb, here?

First of all, I don’t think it’s necessary for a freshman Congressperson to be expert in all matters. The main fault found, I guess, is that she used the unfortunate term “occupation of Palestine” but then corrected herself. (Anyway, if the illegal settlements aren’t a form of “occupation” please send me whatever dictionary you’re smoking!)

I didn’t want to respond until I watched the entire video; my to-do list was long; when I finally got around to finishing the video a mistaken click forced me to reload the video … and the reload icon never went off.

… So I searched “Alexandria Firing Line” at YouTube to see what all the fuss was.
Wow! The wingnuts must be worried about Alexandria because they are crawling out of the woodwork at YouTube. The top two hits were

Sincere question for dalej42. What incensed you so about the Firing Line interview? You didn’t by any chance first read some nutty review did you?

You may be conflating the Six-Day War and the Yom Kippur War. While Israel had plenty of provocation in 1967 — Nasser was being a horse’s ass — it definitely struck first (and destroyed the bulk of the Egyptian air force on the ground).
