Sanderista primaries out 10-term Dem Congressman

I’m from the central US, and I think I agree with Ocasio-Cortez. If Pelosi, Schumer, Clinton, etc., are the “moderates,” then it sure doesn’t look like that approach is working out here in the Plains. We need something different, whether it looks more like Jim Hightower, Bernie Sanders, Raul Grijalva, or Alexandria Ocaso-Cortez. Right now, we could use a Tommy Douglas, Eugene Debs, or even a William Jennings Bryan! And low-key moderate liberals like Claire McCaskill and Jason Kander aren’t it.

Over the past two years or so, I’d say the politician I’ve been hardest on are Donald Trump, Bernie Sanders, and Jeremy Corbyn. And, I hardly think a few comments about Ocasio-Cortez on an anonymous message board is equivalent to me wanting to ‘shut her down.’

Unlike the media, I am not reading any national shift into Ocasio-Cortez’s win in a D+29 congressional district.

Disagree all you want, but when you use baseless personal attacks like “narcissism” simply because she spoke out (which is part of her job) and said something about strategy you disagreed with, you’re going to get criticized. Such comments hurt the future of the Democratic party, even if only a little bit.

I’m impressed by AOC, and look forward to her future successes. As for the rest—I just like liberals. Give us more liberals, any flavor, doesn’t matter, just liberals, please.

Place your bets - I’m predicting she will be given a decent speaking spot at the next convention no matter who wins the nomination. Not because of what she has accomplished but because of her potential to help inspire engagement.

Assuming she is actually consistently articulate and even moderately effective in her position she will be groomed for future leadership.

That’s also true for those who criticize Hillary Clinton for her “ego”, isn’t it?

I’ll resist the temptation to psychoanalyze dalej42 personally. Considering the group of people who are saying things like that as a whole, yes, I do think they wouldn’t feel free to be quite so venomous against a white male. Certainly there have been white male progressives who have pulled off upset wins this year who haven’t inspired threads like this one.

Yes. If someone who hadn’t heard of Hillary Clinton until a few weeks ago was directing nasty personal attacks at her, and couldn’t justify those attacks other than by saying “she has a big ego”, that would be equally wrong.

Did you have some kind of point you were trying to make there?

Cross-thread reference.

Really? There have been white male progressives with upset wins that made (somewhat silly) national headlines about what this portends for the presidential race and who got national attention for their thoughts about how to win in the heartland? Who have inspired threads like this one in which both those who had been die hard Clinton and those who had been die hard Sanders supporters expressed (with few exceptions) excitement and support for their win?

I’ve missed 'em.

More of some attacking the white male Lamb after his win over Saccone in PA-18 because he had distanced himself from Pelosi in his campaign.

The criticism was IMHO both unfounded and misplaced, but accusing people of racism, sexism, youthism, whateverism, because they object to a new face whose one accomplishment is an upset win over a fellow Democrat for a nomination in a very liberal district, telling others who have been successfully at it for a while winning races “in the heartland” that they know better than them how to do that, is even worse.

Demanding hands off because she is of color is demeaning to politicians of color.

Threads like this one? I started this thread because it was an upset win and, as far as I can see, only one poster is critisizing her. Find me another thread about a Sanders wing politician and I can almost guarantee dalej42 will be in there with the same criticisms regardless of their colour or gender.

OK, fair comment. I believe my comment was accurate regarding the larger group of people who say things like this, but it is true that in this particular thread dale is the only one pulling this shit.

Skimming the front page of Elections, I do note that he started a thread about Keith Ellison a while back, who is also a solid Bernie backer, and managed to avoid personal insults. He does hate all things Bernie, but he’s definitely also a misogynist. He has actually been topic banned in the Game Room; he is no longer allowed to comment on any cases of athletes being accused of sexual misconduct, because he was consistently spamming every thread on that topic with toxic, hateful crap about the accusers.

No.

How many times did I defend Hillary Clinton? I supported her from day one. I also voted and volunteered for Tammy Duckworth and also supported her from day one. In addition, I voted for Sara Feigenholtz for the Illinois House of Representatives. And, that’s just top of the ballot races.

Frankly, what that comment sounded like to me was not so much about gender or race as about not being sufficently deferent to her “elders” (by party standing and experience, not necessarily by age).

But to me, I welcome newcomers who are hungry and have fire in their eyes and want to rock the boat and who yes, will talk back to the Elders as equals. Let them get tested and humbled if need be, but also give them the chance to teach this old dog something new.

Ocasio-Cortez is backing three unicorn candidates. Cori Bush is running for Missouri CD 1 which is held by William Lacy Clary who will crush her. Zephyr Teachout is a perennial candidate now running for New York Attorney General and will also be crushed. If you remember the name, Teachout tied herself to Bernie’s Sour Revolution but easily defeated for New York’s 19 CD. Linsey Fagan is running a hopeless campaign in solidly Republican Texas CD 26, which was formerly held by Dick Armey. No blue wave is flipping that district.

Cori Bush is a Black Lives Matter candidate and a Justice Democrat. She may not win this time out, but i think she should keep trying.

Young minority woman who pulled off an upset win in quixotic primary race tries to fundraise for those with compatible political views who are also in long (or even longer) shot circumstances.

You were thinking she’d use her newfound national soapbox to encourage playing it safer maybe?

Anyway, you are highly likely right that these are not races that will flip Blue. But long term building name recognition and infrastructure, and outperforming expectations, is the only path to future chances in those districts. One can argue that resources might be better spent in more flippable districts, but the potential small progressive donors she is appealing to are not choosing between these races and a very centrist D in a conservative district; they are being sold on donating at all. Contesting everywhere is an arguable perspective as well.

William Lacy Clay is a Black Caucus Democrat. He’s been in the House since 2001. He’s not my Congressman, and I don’t personally know any reason to throw him overboard for Cori Bush, but I don’t suppose 1st District voters would be obliged to keep an incumbent just because he be experienced and inoffensive.

ETA: Actually, given that W. Lacy Clay inherited the seat from his father, Bill Clay, Sr., I can imagine some reasons 1st District voters might think he takes them for granted, whether he does or not.

Not only that, but his father resigned on the filing deadline and the only candidate that filed wa Clay Jr.

Clay Jr. also divorced his wife by announcing it first through the media. He’s also had members of his family and his foundation on his payroll.

So, I can see why some voters might want to look elsewhere, but this district looks like a lock for Clay, regardless of his ethics.
