> How do you hold it - Meat on top, stuff underneath or vice versa?
I hold it in my hand.
> Do you butter it?
Yes.
> Does it have mayo?
Sometimes: camembert & cranberry needs no mayo, nor does beef & tomato (a touch of mustard there!), ditto gravelax / smoked salmon, ditto cucumber, etc.
> Does it have both?
Sometimes.
> Is it made with slices of bread, baguette, or some other type of bread?
Depends upon the bread available.
> White or brown?
I prefer granary bread but I’ll eat what’s available.
I’m not the next doper, and I have no strong sandwich opinions, but the default English Mustard in the UK and in many ways the best is Colmans. It may be a tad hotter than you are used to though.
Sriracha is a Thai hot sauce, kind of like thick Tabasco with a little sugar in it, about the consistency of chunky ketchup. It’s yummy, but can overpower other tastes if you use much.
Lunchmeat sandwiches on sliced bread usually have butter and mustard, I go with the denser darker breads. If my sandwich is on a hard crust hoagie roll, the condiment of choice is a vinegarette.
I reserve mayo for mixing with chicken, boiled eggs or tuna and spread it on croissants or pumpernickel or stuffed in a pita. Oh yeah BLT’s in a warmed pita with a generous glop of mayo, mm whens lunch?
How do you hold it - Meat on top, stuff underneath or vice versa? - Meat on the bottom.
Do you butter it? - Only if it’s grilled cheese.
Does it have mayo? - I used to adore mayo, but I’m finding that I don’t like it so much anymore, so probably not. Sometimes I’ll put it on the outside of grilled cheese or in chicken salad, but that’s about it.
Does it have both? - No way.
Is it made with slices of bread, baguette, or some other type of bread? - Usually slices of bread.
White or brown? - Brown
And I adore potato chips inside a sandwich.
My question: do most Dopers use leftover meat for sandwiches or buy deli meat?
How do you hold it - Meat on top, stuff underneath or vice versa? - depends on what it is - i usually eat any salad filling in the middle of lettuce. Otherwise… guess it depends on my mood.
Do you butter it? No… not even on grilled cheese
Does it have mayo? - Miracle whip! Especially on grilled cheese! Or I will use whatever mustard fancies me at the time (I luv tuna & mustard!)
Does it have both? - sometimes both miracle whip and mustard
in a case of leftover roast beef (not deli-style), it is either an open face w/mashed taters and gravy or bread with KC style BBQ sauce (what the hell is wrong with you Southerners and making every sauce taste like vinegar?! gads, even freakin breadstick pizza sauce? ack!)
Is it made with slices of bread, baguette, or some other type of bread? - Usually slices of bread. Sometimes bagel (oh how I miss Big Apple Bagels)
White or brown? - Brown, honey-wheat lowcal
Side of? Chips usually, sometimes a fruit/fruit salad
Chips in a sandwich? is this an east coast thing?
What’s your all time favorite homemade sandwich? fresh Tomato sandwiches with miraclewhip, salt & pepper. If I’m feeling gourmet - I’ll add spinach to get my green in. If there’s leftover cornedbeef - a messy cornbeef & cabbage (which had been sauted in butter & seasoned with salt &pepper) - yummy yummy yummy!
What cheeses to we like on our sandwiches?
i’m not a big cheese-eater but occassionally will crave it. Provalone or muenster, sometimes swiss.
Newest sandwhich? oyster po-boy in the French Quarter. I pretty much just ate the fried oysters.
leftover meat for sandwiches or buy deli meat? Deli unless leftovers are available.
My question
Most unusual sandwich combo (for you) that you liked? for me: the “new” chicken salad with fruits & nuts.
How do you hold it - Meat on top, stuff underneath or vice versa? – Meat on the bottom.
Do you butter it? – Never
Does it have mayo? – depends on the sandwich. Turkey, tuna salad, and chicken use mayo, roast beef uses Russian dressing, and pastrami or ham uses mustard.
Does it have both? – No.
Is it made with slices of bread, baguette, or some other type of bread? – Depends. Turkey, PB&J, and BLTs (toasted) are best on white, the rest are best on rye. Pumpernickel is good, too, and also like a good roll or baguette.
White or brown? – depends
My question: do most Dopers use leftover meat for sandwiches or buy deli meat?
Leftover turkey is great for sandwiches, but otherwise I stick with deli.
How do you hold it - Meat on top, stuff underneath or vice versa?
Does it matter? I mean really. It’s not like I’m only going to bite through the top half of the sandwich. I honestly don’t think I’ve ever noticed what was on top.
Do you butter it?
Only if it’s grilled. And not always then. Otherwise, no.
Does it have mayo?
Never.
Does it have both?
Hell no.
(BTW, I don’t like mustard, but that seems to be a more common sandwich spread than butter over here.)
Is it made with slices of bread, baguette, or some other type of bread?
My favorite sandwich breads are croissants. But otherwise - whatever. I wouldn’t put peanut butter & jelly on a baguette. But cheese and meat go into whatever is handy.
Kosher or not?
Bacon is good. Really, really, really good. As are bacon and cheese and apple sandwiches. Or ham and cheese. Or roast pork.
Bacon cheeseburgers alone are a reason I could never convert.
How do you hold it? Glad to know I’m not the only one that can notice a difference on one side or the other. What side though depends on the sandwich.
Do you butter it? On a grilled cheese or butter and jelly sandwich, but that’s it.
Does it have mayo? Of course. Only real, normal mayo though.
I highly suspect that the Miracle Whip plant is actually Satan’s sperm bank and he is having a good laugh at all you sandwich spoilers. Same goes for horseradish.
**Both?**Favorite combos: Mayo/Mustard(yellow, and lots of it)/deli meats or tuna; Mayo/BBQ/steak; Butter/Jelly/na; PB/Jelly/na; PB/Honey/na
Bread? Not a big issue, but depending on the sandwich- multigrain, dark rye, or King’s Hawaiian are preferred.
For next poster:
Last sandwich meal eaten? Me- pastrami on dark rye, mayo, mustard, tomatoes, spinach, sprouts; side of Tim’s Cascade salt & vinegar chips; and a big, cold glass of milk.
Never heard of butter and mayo at the same time, I feel my arteries hardening at the thought of it.
I use plain, sliced bread. Wheat, white, whole grain, doesn’t matter (I just hate rye). I use whatever is around, but if I can I go for the low-calorie bread.
I usually put mayo or a mixture of mayo and mustard on one side.
If I’m eating the sandwich immediately, I don’t really care about the order of the items inside. if I’m packing it to be eaten later, I make sure to keep the mushy/wet stuff (tomato, cucumber, etc) in the middle to keep it from making the bread soggy and I put the dryer stuff (meat, cheese, lettuce) on the outside of the inside.
Last Sandwich Eaten: Probably turkey, hummus, cucumber, tomato, lettuce, a little mayo and a little mustard on my low-cal bread. Not my absolute favorite sandwich, but it comes close!
Ketchup on a sandwich: Yay or nay? If yay, on what kind of sandwich?
(As for me, I could never have ketchup on any sandwich, but I know people who LOVE it.)
