Much as I don’t care for the Casey clan, I’ve got to vote for anyone over Santorum this fall. Can I write in a Big Spotted Dog?
Trespassing, my ass! The issue has been raised time and again that Senator Buttmunch doesn’t reside in PA, and only maintains a token (empty) residence in Penn Hills. OOH! Those evil nasty sons-of-bitches trespassing on my empty property in an effort to establish that I’m the lying sack-of-shit that I am. How dare they? :wally
This Republican is offended by your egregious conduct and skirting of the law by living in VA while claiming to represent PA. You! Outta my party!
The Greens, Libertarians and Constitution Party should all have candidates on the ballot. I also find our two “major brand” choices completely unacceptable.
Who are you? And what did you do with danceswithcats?
Stuff like this shows that Santorum deserves for all eternity the slang created for him a while ago. (Just do a google search for his name, first link explains what I’m saying)
I laud your open eyes regarding Santorum. Don’t forget that he was one of the Gang of Seven who were arguably key to laying the foundation for the current Republican party.
Don’t forget that he has also taken our (Pennsylvanians’) money to school his children, despite in reality being Virginians. Further recall that he has been benefitting financially from his relationships with businesses, his half a million dollar mortgage deal, and his shady charity, Operation Good Neighbor, among a host of other dubious qualities and traits.
I am far from a Santorum fan and would love to see him gone. Part of the problem is corruption in both parties. I agree with a previous poster that we need to try and support a third party or at least pay attention and keep throwing our leaders out of office if they can’t keep their greedy fucking fingers out of the cookie jar once they get there.
It pisses me off that members of either party will turn a blind eye to blatant greed and dishonesty within their own party and just see it as “politics”
OK, Lord please forgive me for defending Rick-fucking-Santorum, but what’s wrong with senators living where they work? When Senate’s in session, he has to be here pretty much nonstop, and maybe he doesn’t want to be separated from his family. Now, if he doesn’t have any real interest in PA, not coming round and talking to folks, has no real ties there at all, and got his job by precinct-shopping, etc., then sure, his PA credentials deserve criticism. Is there more to it than him simply not occupying his house in PA? Was it a sham in the first place, or something?
Nothing. However, he shouldn’t be getting tax credits for tuition that is meant to support schools in PENNSYLVANIA when his kids don’t even go to school there.
Is this same deal available to anyone who has a legal residence in Pennsylvania but a physical residence elsewhere? Or is this something unique to the Santorums?
One would hope that a Senator would seek to uphold the spirit and not just the letter of the law. Does his use of these funds counter the spirit of this “tax credit” situation? I ask this sincerely, as I do not know the specifics.
Except for the ones from the area, they all have at least crash pads if not houses in the DC area - they obviously have to. But they do come home pretty regularly. The OP story is that Ol’ Frothy’s house looks like he doesn’t.
The spirit of the law is that members of Congress are entitled to be treated as residents of their home state and district. They have a job that requires them to maintain two residences. Any argument that starts out, “He really lives in DC, not here,” is a non-starter in my book.
Now, I am open to, “He really lives in District 3, but has a mailbox in District 5,” or “He really lives in Wisconsin, but has an empty house in Texas,” arguments. But excoriating a senator for acting like he lives in his home state when he has another residence in the DC area is not fair. It’s not right to ask a man to live apart from his family when Congres is in session; it’s not right to ask him to give up his residency in the state he represents while he is engaged in representing that state.
The beef about the educational tax credit is that the Santorum children attend(ed) a cyber school paid for with Penn Hills School District funds. Unlike at a bricks-and-mortar school, parents who reside outside the district cannot pay tuition at this cyber school, so if the Santorums are not residents of PA, then they are not eligible to use the cyber school, which costs the district about $7500 per student per year. Basically, then, the argument runs that since the Santorums don’t reside in the district that provides their kids’ education, they’re abusing the PA school system since they should be sending their kids to school in Virginia, where they actually live.
Hey, Bricker, do you have a comment on Santorum’s false accusations of trespassing or are you just here to defend the right of the rich to force taxpayers to pay for their kids’ private schools?
And it would probably be a non issue had he not used the exact same argument against another congressman in order to win his seat in 1990. It’s pretty obvious that congressmen are required to remain as close to DC as possible; they work there. But don’t denounce someone as being out of touch with the people of Pennsylvania because horrified shock “he doesn’t even LIVE here!” and then turn around and do the exact same thing yourself. People tend to remember things like that. Causes them to feel like fools for being fished in by such a stupid assed argument, and nobody likes being made a fool of in public. Especially if they end up paying the guy who made them look like fools.
