Sarah Lawrence College--How Rigorous?

At a recent cocktail party, I ran into a woman who seemed intent on impressing my friends and I with her academic credentials.

At one point, she informed us that she graduated from one of the “Seven Sisters” (in this case, SL, though I had forgotten SL was one of the “Sisters”) and tried to impress upon us how academically rigorous SL was. She graduated in 1982. Most of the people she was talking to graduated from an Ivy or Ivy comparable school.

Frankly, I always thought SL was for the artsy types and that it is not academically very selective–certainly not back in the early 80s.

Two words…Yoko Ono.

…Tell you the truth, I’m not sure HOW SL stacks up against the other Sisters schools in terms of academics. We’ve got several Vassar and Smith grads on the board; I’ll wait for them to show up and hand over the straight dope.

The Seven Sisters are:
Vassar
Wellesley
Bryn Mawr
Radcliffe
Smith
Barnard
Mount Holyoke

…not Sarah Lawrence. So, your cocktail friend is misinformed at least. However, it’s a pretty good, fairly competitive school.
