Ah, well as long as comic book characters and other fictional works make it a positive term, then all the world is right. “Rogue cop” is, on the other hand, a real-life situation. But we’ll just have to agree to disagree.
Watch me attempt to translate! cracks knuckles
After puzzling over that statement, I think she’s saying:
“Rogue isn’t an insult. But rogues can’t work efficiently on teams. So his being a rogue is the reason he was fired but it’s not a horrible negative thing, generally speaking.”
I might be giving her more credit than I should.
I have a hard time hearing “maverick” without putting “god damn it” in front of it.
Yep, rogue cops in the movies are staples. Some are good and some are bad, but I think she was trying to get across the bad cop version of rogue, even though she denies it.
There are several grey areas here obviously. There are some cops who do bad things for arguably good reasons.
Dirty Harry: Clint Eastwood (good, I assume. I haven’t seen any of the DH movies)
Lakeview Terrace: Samuel L. Jackson (bad)
48 Hours: Nick Nolte (good)
Dark Blue: Kurt Russell (bad)
Die Hard: Bruce Willis (good)
American Gangster: Josh Brolin (bad)
The Gauntlet: Clint Eastwood (good)
The Departed: Matt Damon (bad)
The French Connection: Gene Hackman (good)
Narc: Ray Liotta (bad)
Bullitt: Steve McQueen (good)
Internal Affairs: Richard Gere (bad)
Street Kings: Keanu Reeves (good)
Touch of Evil: Orson Welles (bad)
Cop Land: Sylvester Stallone (good)
Bad Lieutenant: Harvey Keitel (bad)
Beverly Hills Cop: Eddie Murphy (good)
Training Day: Denzel Washington (bad)
L.A. Confidential: Russell Crowe (good)
The Professional (aka Leon): Gary Oldman (bad)
Witness: Harrison Ford (good)
and so on.
Ok, this adds nothing to the discussion, but it was fun to think up movies.
You missed
Q&A: Nick Nolte (bad)
It doesn’t have quite as much punch as if you had put it after 48 Hours, but there you go.
Yes, but it wouldnt’ help you if you were applying for a job in which probity was important and your fuck up was deliberate and criminal.
Thanks. I haven’t seen that one.
I don’t know where to put this, and it’s not worth starting a new thread about, but I found it interesting. In an interview with ABC setting the record straight on some of the gossip about him, Levi Johnston, who unfortunately is dropping out of school, said this too:
Mad props to him for not continuing the negativity of his future mother-in-law!
Andrew Sullivan ran an interesting series this weekend on his blog titled The Odd Lies of Sarah Palin. It really is staggering when you stack them all up just how often and how effortlessly she lies. The most concerning part is how many of her falsehoods are not only demonstrably fasle, but aren’t really necessary to begin with.
A prime example is the story about her accepting McCain’s invitation to be his running mate. She told Hannity that she took a vote with the girls, and they agreed unanimously that she should go for it. Her husband and the McCain campaign contradict this account though, stating the girls were kept in the dark until they were told in Ohio that their mom was going to be running for Vice President.
Who gives a rat’s arse, you ask? I certainly don’t care whether her girls were involved in the decision or not, but the fact that she seems to have made this conversation up out of nothing is telling. She lies when it benefits her, and sometimes when it doesn’t. She did it again when she said her teleprompter failed while she was speaking. It didn’t. This is why I think she has trouble with relatively softball questions, like what magazines she reads and what Supreme Court cases she disagrees with. Of course she knows the answers to both of these questions (she had just publically disagreed with the Supreme Court’s ruling on a case involving Exxon in Alaska a few months prior to that interview), but she didn’t have a response crafted specifically to serve her purposes, so she fumbled the ball. Like the old quote says, “If you tell the truth you never have to remember what you said.” I think she stuggles with remembering what she said constantly.
When I tell people I don’t like Sarah Palin (my conservative friends LOVE her, especially conservative female friends) because she’s a liar, they respond with something akin to, “OMG a politician who lies stop the presses!!” Yeah yeah, I know they all do it to some extent, but her lieing is on a whole other level in my eyes. It’s really almost compulsive. I think sometimes she lies because that’s just what she does.
I’m pretty sure the Phillies don’t play hockey. You’re looking at the Philadelphia Flyers.
As for Palin getting booed at a Steeler game, well, someone would have to invite her. Do you see Dan Rooney doing that?
She deserves the boos, however, for being a lying, fundie, anti-woman criminally vindictive bitch.
I know she’s said to have the proverbial “nice rack,” but I can’t comprehend why her mammaries would be asked about the VP candidacy. Given her reputation for strict morality, though, it’s probably just as well that she kept them under cover.
Oh, come on . . . this is the Pit, and somebody was going to say it!
In the latest departure from McCain policy, Bible Spice has stated that she believes there should be a consitutional amendment banning gay marriage. Yeah, let’s fuck with the constitution to remove rights.
To his credit, McCain says it’s a state issue, which may just be his way of dodging the issue.
Well, it’s not quite over for Troopergate, it seems. One of our legislators has asked for an investigation into witness tampering on part of the McCain-Palin campaign. He wants to know if they illegally advised state employees to ignore subpoenas, which is a criminal offense in Alaska. The McFailin campaign has, of course, said such a thing has no basis, but even if it did, it should be referred to the Personnel Board, which is controlled by guess who? Les Gara (the legislator) has asked for an independent investigator to pursue the matter.
It seems there is hope in the McCain campaign that Palin may save their ass.
I find that distressing. Very troubling. Palin isn’t really qualified and Heavens Forbid if she became president…geez, the thought makes me lose control of my bowels.
*d’oh! Yeah, Flyers, that’s what I meant.
Forgive me, my mind was still a bit scrambled from all those seizures that day.
Actually, I’d LOVE to see her get her ass booed at a Pens or Steelers game, as much as I loathe her. If she was invited to an away game by the opposing team’s owner…
Wow-you and I agree on something. I’m scared.
Apparently the campaign has spent $150,000 on clothes, hair, and makeup.
Something all us Joe Sixpacks can relate to. ![]()
LOL of the day:
http://thinkprogress.org/2008/10/24/palin-fruit-flies/
Sarah talks about how we need to do more for children with autism, not funding earmark money-wasting projects like research on fruit flies. TPM points out that research on fruit flies has actually led to valuable discoveries regarding… you guessed it… autism.
She really just can’t avoid saying stupid things. I’m going to miss her on November 5. ![]()
You could move to Alaska.
To get back to the OP, now that Sarah and Todd have testified to the commision thaey wanted to run the investigation, I wonder if it’s possible there will be a report out even from it before the election?
I doubt it’ll even matter anymore.
You, sir, are a wild-eyed optimist.
