Saturday Night Live UK pilot

Finally saw the episode. Other than a slightly exposed midriff the singer was wearing a long sleeve shirt and jeans. And she pretty much just stood there or played guitar. Are you sure you didn’t mistake the musical act for the British Themed Pub in Spain sketch?

Well, there you go. More AI glurge.

Her jeans were cut low enough to expose her grooming choices. That’s not “slightly exposed”. Also note: I’m not saying they shouldn’t have been on the show - I’m just saying I have no interest in watching them perform.

I’m enjoying it! Obviously the bits that require more familiarity with what’s going on in Britain went over my head. But the humor is there.

The popular music scene was very different in those days, where radio play of the Top 40 concentrated public awareness of bands into a relatively small cohort. Now anyone can gain enough of a niche following to qualify as popular.

Speaking as an old white guy the fact that I am familiar with both Wet Leg and Wolf Alice is a sufficient indicator that they are in the public consciousness (although I think Wet Leg peaked with their first album frankly). And even good musical guests on SNL US have often put in tepid performances. We’ll see where they go from here.

You just have to find 51 years of Billboard magazine and a list of every musical performer on the show. Easy peasy.

Also, Elvis Costello was virtually unknown at the time he was on. He was a last minute replacement for the Sex Pistols.

Good! I liked the first episode, but the whole time I was thinking:
“The Brits do TV comedy so much better … WHY try to import a show?
Just put more Lee Mack and John Finnemore and Mitchell and Webb (and especially Bob Mortimer!) on the air!”

But then we end up with this problem:

Fans of The Windsors will recognize Celeste Dring from her role as Princess Eugenie.

That was rather funny. I have no idea how they kept hitting the vocal fry at the end of their sentences. Try it at home and see.
