Mrs. Moto was feeling poorly on Friday, so we brought her into the OB/GYN office to make sure everything was fine. Everything wasn’t.
She was seven centimeters dialated, and her water had broken. This is not great when you’re eight weeks from your due date with twins, both of whom are still heads up.
Mrs. Moto was placed in a wheelchair and brought to the adjoining hospital by a frantic nurse, who was stressing far worse than my wife. While I checked her in, she was prepped for an emergency c-section.
Sara arrived first, all 2 pounds 13 ounces of her. Her brother Francis came just two minutes later, 3 pounds 8 ounces. The kids were rushed to the neonatal intensive care unit, where they were intubated and treated with surfactant. My wife saw them for about three minutes while being wheeled from OR to the hospital room, then didn’t see them again until mid-Saturday.
Flash forward to Monday. Both kids are breathing room air, and are tolerating light feedings to supplement IV nutrition. We got to hold them today for the first time. They’ll remain in the hospital for the next few weeks, but things look good now. Mrs. Moto comes home in the morning.
They’re tiny, but otherwise perfect in every way. Good looking, too.
If you’re so inclined, say hi to Francis and Sara Moto, and Mrs. Moto too.
How long will it be before they start arguing? “Don’t call me your little brother!”
Seriously, all the best to you, the wife, and the kids. Isn’t modern medicine wonderful? Tell your wife to rest up now before the kids come home(well, you too actually) because you are both going to need it with two babies to take care of. Pictures?
Congratulations! And welcome Francis and Sara!! (I figured I’d mention the little guy first - he’ll have a lot of “Sara and Francis” mentions later in life!) Tell Mrs. Moto congrats and we are anxiously awaiting pictures of the newest babies on the block!
We’ll hear from you in about four months, when (from what the other twin parents I know say) you’ll be hitting your stride enough to make parents of singletons wonder how the heck you do it.
Congratulations. Don’t worry, no sleep for the next few months if not years but it will be worth it. Thinking good thoughts for the health and strong growth of your little ones.
Are Sara and Francis in the same incubator? I heard somewhere that is very good for preemie twins…they tend to calm each other and thrive quicker.
My sister was a month premature 30 odd years ago. She survived fine enough to bug the hell out of me growing up
Read up what you can on preemie babies. FWIU, they’ll be about two months behind as far as sitting up and walking and talking since they were two months early.
Good luck to the Moto family, and post pictures when you can.
::sending big strong healthy thoughts to the munchkins::
Co-bedding isn’t done where they are; I wish it was. The consolation is that they haven’t had to be moved to another hospital, and this one is only six miles away.
