scaring some old people on halloween

First, some background-About 2 years ago, I found out that my great-uncle Max, 93 and twice a widower, lived only a half hour bus ride away from me. I started visiting him once a week. We have plenty in common and I’ve come to love him very much. Then he sold his house, and moved into a an assisted living facility. It wasn’t a “home”. It’s more of a single story apartment building. It didn’t feel, look or smell like a hospital. My problem was that I now had to take 2 buses to visit Max. Uncle Max had actually sold his house and moved as a first step to moving in with a relative in Florida. He moved the second week of October. I’m still living in Philadelphia, PA. The day after Uncle Max moved, I became throrouhly depressed and slept for abput 36 hours straight. The point is, I have a very elderly relative and was friendly with many other residents of the facility he lived in.

The IDEA of kids singing grim reaper songs or "The Worms Crawl In" IS funny. If they actually DID sing these songs at a nursing home, it would be sick, tasteless and offensive. If the music director doesn't take out the grim reaper song, they should be fired.

I just got back in town from my grandmother’s funeral, for God’s sake, and you know what? I still think this is funny. Kung Fu Lola nailed it.

That being said, it would behoove the music director to make sure that the people there were NOT going to be offended. I know my sense of humor is wack in this area

From Treehouse of Horror VI, (the “Nightmare on Elm Street” parody)
Lisa: Bart! Don’t you realize what this means? The next time we fall asleep, we could [weakly] die!
Abe: Ehh, welcome to my world! [falls asleep)

I, too, think the idea of singing “The Grim Reaper is coming to town” is funny in a sick, black humor fashion. However, good sense should prevail and somebody should definitely smack the music director upside the head.

Chique, lighten up. We are ALL going to die, including you and me, sooner or later. (since I live in the DC [sub]anthrax, terrorists[/sub] area, mine might be sooner). Laughing at death is a sensible, sane response to the inevitable. I think singing that song would be reprehensible, but it IS funny.

So who is the music director, Danny Elfman??

IMHO, the idea of doing it is funny is a really sick sort of way. Actually doing it would be reprehensible.

Klaatu mate, - I’m impressed, and not much impresses me. One of the Gentlemen of the SDMB. Long may you continue to have a prominent place here. I wish you well with the personal stuff you referred to.
And I think Green bean and others nail it well.

And also “something something Niktu”. ie don’t blow up the world please.

Listen. The thing that I thought was funny about the whole situation (and still do) is that the school did not get it. I do not dislike elderly people. I have grandmothers, great aunts, and whatnot. I just thought it was amusing that the music director overlooked it. Maybe he does not have a twisted mind like most of us do. I apologize to the people that may have been affended, but like I said, I only thought the situation was funny; the way a typo or a misprint in the newspaper is. geesh

did you call the school and/or the music director to point out the problems with the proposed program? I sure hope so; otherwise, your insensitivity is appalling.

Hell, they should not only do it but pay people to hide in the people’s rooms to jump out and yell “BOO!” at them. This was the funniest thing I have seen in a long time. Although the Nambla daycare was up there too.

HUGS!
