Schlep Timbre (September Mini-Rants)

Hampton Inn @ I75 Clinton Tn this morning both of the hard boiled eggs I chose for breakfast were purple and brown inside.

Had to check out in person where the desk clerk was a bit snippy for no reason. Gladly told her in a loudish voice the status of their eggs for the benefit of the breakfast room to ovwehear.

OMG that is disgusting!
There are times that traveling really bites.

I am 80 percent packed to go to Ireland Monday morning.
I hate packing so much that I would probably do therapy if I had the time.

Stomach and mind compete for worst impact of anxiety.

Down to purse and pills lol.
And some To Do lists for when I get home.
And some hygiene activities.
And a bit of laundry.
It never ends until I lock the door behind me…

Purse and pills will be intersecting this time since I am only traveling with a carry on. I need a degree in geometry just to get everything in that I need.

Downloaded a few library books to take. Just realized that they were about the KGB and Moscow so I added one about ghosts lol.

It seems that my return on October 7th will be rather cold so I will need to set the furnace for 65.

Checked my luggage for any stray THC and I’m all good.

No, you just have to play some Tetris.

Proud of you for travelin’ light.
Every time I pack I take less and less, and still only wear/use half of what I pack.
Wish I knew which half I could leave behind…

My gf went there with a friend and their mothers a few years ago. It was a mother-daughter trip. My MIL did not heed her daughter’s advice about warm clothing.

There are beautiful pictures of their foursome in spectacular locations, but in every picture you can hear MIL’s teeth chattering.

LOL that reminds me of a trip my wife and I took to Yellowstone about 20 years ago. We went in late May, the week before Memorial Day. Back home we had already had several days in the upper 80s or lower 90s, so most of what I packed were shorts and t-shirts. When we got there, there were still several inches of snow on the ground - and in fact the upper loop of the park was still closed off. Luckily I had packed one pair of jeans and a hooded sweatshirt, so I wasn’t completely screwed.

I try to pack clothes according to what the weather forecast says for my destination, and leave behind “just in case the weather changes” clothing. Then, if the weather does take an unexpected turn, I treat myself to an appropriate garment bought at the vacation spot. That garment then becomes a souvenir of that trip. I have an Oregon Ducks t-shirt and a Carhartt thermal mesh weave shirt in my closet right now that remind me pleasantly of trips to the PNW.

LOL! I am a bit overdressed for Pennsylvania this morning but I am sure I will appreciate it once I get there. No chattering teeth for me!

I am prepared for the cold, wind and rain.

When my kids were little, every summer on a very hot weekend I’d take them to Laurel Caverns for a tour of the caves and caverns. I always brought hoodies for everyone.

They had a little gift shop where you could buy Laurel Caverns coffee mugs, shot glasses, etc, reasonably priced but made in China.

They also sold Laurel Caverns hoodies which were about double what you’d expect to pay.

It was hilarious seeing families begrudgingly buying hoodies. Yes, it’s 98 degrees outside, but it is 52 degrees underground.

LOL! Laurel Caverns is awesome. Good for you getting the kids all hoodied up. Never can have too many hoodies in my world.

I used to love caverns and probably hit all of them within a 4 hour radius back when my son was young.

Fill up the car
we’re goin’ cavin!

I have budgeted for the possibility of needing to buy another hoodie.

Where it will find a ride home is anyone’s guess. Maybe I will wear layers lol?!

Wouldn’t know; don’t listen to the commercial long enough to notice. Their bear commercials rub (no pun intended) me the wrong way!

This! I whole-heartedly endorse this pitting! Fuck Fall, it is no better than the seventh best season (which is hard to do when there are only four of 'em!)

Race in WV, 25ish years ago, also the week before memorial day. Also unseasonably cold; bought a sweatshirt at WVU, it was the classic hillbilly printed on the front- hat, corn cob pipe, long beard, overalls that were too short/shredded at the bottom, barefoot. I met the model for that shirt - four separate times as we drove around that state!

2000-mid-teens - I did an ultramarathon on another continent. Left on Mon for a weekend race, 24hrs to get there + some time zone acclimatization / sightseeing for the intermediate days. The 7-day forecast was in line with the historical forecasts & my experience having been there in the past. Nope, forecast changed, it was about 15-20° colder on the night of the race than normal. I had a mesh baseball cap & the temp was below freezing, nothing to cover my ears at all & nothing warm on on my head. I was wearing every layer that I had…simultaneously. I was on a good pace but ended up throwing in the towel due to being cold & knowing it wasn’t sustainable.

My rant - I stopped in the supermarket yesterday evening on my way home to get a couple of things. One of the end caps was all the prep stuff for...Thanksgiving! - Stove Top (Turkey), French Fried Onions, canned green beans, canned yams, cranberry sauce, & gallon bottles of peanut oil (for turkey fryers). That's a new one on me; I've seen other holidays, especially Christmas way too early but Thanksgiving more than two months in advance?

Mail it to yourself; roll it up in a brown paper bag, tape it up, send it. Postage shouldn’t be that costly.

When we went to Laurel Caverns, there was a friggin bat on the ceiling of the gift shop, tucked in a corner, sleeping it off. Guess the cave was too cold for him, too. Pretty sure there were no bat-sized hoodies.

Good idea!

That’s a cute visualization - bats with hoodies.

Bats are cute, and bat rescues use this well.

Adorable!

Is that picture upside down?

Hah! It’s from a bat rescue. Yes, there are bat rescues.

Didn’t doubt you for a second. Fortunately, it seems there are enough types of humans that most animals have a rescue.

And now, I’m off to the What Makes You Smile thread. Thanks, kayaker and ellecram!
