Okay, so I was listening to a Scottish ballad with the following chorus:
“Wooin’ at her, puin’ at her
Courtin’ her but cannae catch her
Dirty elf, it’s for her pelf
that all the lads are wooin’ at her”
I’ve learned that “pelf” basically means “booty”, thought not sure if this is booty in the sense of pirate booty or biotch booty.
More to the point, what does “puin’” (pronounced “poo-in’”) mean? It seems that sense of the word I am familiar with would explain why their courting her but can’t get her (few women I know would be impressed at being “pued” at.) Anyone know the proper meaning?
