A small Texas school district has made facial coverings part of its dress code, in a bid to get around Gov. Greg Abbott’s executive order banning mask mandates.
The board of the Paris Independent School District, which has about 4,000 students, said in a statement Tuesday that the governor’s order does not usurp its ability to manage schools.
“The Board believes the dress code can be used to mitigate communicable health issues, and therefore has amended the PISD dress code to protect our students and employees,” the district said.
The San Antonio Independent School District says to Gov. Abbott.
The San Antonio Independent School District plans to keep requiring students and staff to wear masks even if the courts declare an end to the Metropolitan Health District’s order that all schools in Bexar County do so.

Asked about possible legal repercussions from the state, Martinez, in an interview announcing the moves Monday, said, “To be honest, I’m not really worried about that, I’m just focused on our students.” He discussed both directives with the SAISD board later that evening.

Bravo!
Today when I was at the car dealership getting my tires rotated, the service desk guy I’ve been dealing with for years told me that his little boy was all set to go to pre-kinder when they found out that at least five parents were sending their kids who were COVID-positive. So he and his wife decided to keep him home even though the boy was really looking forward to it. Fortunately they can do that because his wife is home with a new baby.
It is a dilemma for parents who have to go to work and don’t have options for child care. But to endanger the whole class/school and all the families…
There really are a lot of people out there who actively WANT to sicken and kill children, because they are that invested politically.
What’s next? Declare tuberculosis a liberal hoax, and deliberately spread it to each other?
Yes, pretty much it’s all complete loyalty to the red tribe above all else. If being true to the red means that you fight efforts to keep your kids from getting sick, that’s what you do. If your kids die because of it, it’s all worth it to own the libs.
I suspect there’s a big dose of having doubled, tripled, or more down because they won’t admit they were wrong, combined with some serious ignorance and stubborn intransigence about what the politicians are really saying.
For example, I keep seeing people on the news saying that it should be parent’s choice, and it’s an infringement on freedom, etc… with regard to mask mandates in and out of school.
Which is probably true in an absolute sense, but they’re COMPLETELY missing the fact that with freedom comes responsibility. If they weren’t ignorant, they’d realize that they should be free to choose mask wearing or not, but that the responsible choice for people having that freedom is to wear masks.
They seem to want unfettered selfish freedom to do what they want without regard to others. Same damn story when it comes to emissions controls, pesticide regulations, and so forth. Every single one should theoretically be free, and every single one should have responsible people doing exactly what the restrictions mandate, because it’s been proven they want freedom without responsibility.
What I find baffling is that many conservatives who screamed for years that public schools were liberal indoctrination of children, are now fighting with all their might for schools to remain fully open so that they can send their kids back to the liberal indoctrination.
I posted this in another thread but I will also post it here. Monoclonal antibodies like regeneron are free and available. The only fees that need to be paid may be a facility fee for the infusion center that shouldn’t be more than a couple of hundred dollars at most.
COVID-19 Treatments | HHS/ASPR This is the government website with information on monoclonal antibody treatment and how to get it. All primary care physicians should be aware of this but if not, they have a number to call and lists of facilities that have the monoclonal antibodies available along with contact information.
… for patients determined to be in a “high risk” category. (ETA: being in a wheelchair due to a spinal injury does not seem to be on their list of “high risk” categories, so maybe being an asshole politician should be added to the list)
He is within two years of age (63) of qualifying on age alone (anyone 65), regardless of any other conditions. Immobility, such as paralysis/paraplegia, can predispose one to respiratory compromise, the two in juxtaposition (almost 65+paraplegia) make it not unreasonable for his doctors to play it safe and treat him. I don’t begrudge him, it’s a really close decision point to call.
I do.
The CDC considers overweight (BMI>25) to be a high risk condition. More than 60% of the population has a BMI that high.
Thanks for the info, psychobunny. I simply assumed they cost money because they’re not cheap to make. I forgot that the government is paying for that.
You’re allowed~he’s messing in your state. My beloved firstborn lives there now too and I have no love lost for Abbot.
If there was a shortage of that treatment or if he was snatching from someone in dire straits, I would be less charitable.
Plus now we can point our fingers at him and cackle about him needing cutting edge medicine to stave off a nothingburger. Cackle rights, I love them.
I’ll trade you for Pete Ricketts, even up.
FWIW, I just checked the order form at the local hospital and under the qualifying conditions for the monoclonal antibodies they do include BMI>25, age >65, hypertension and even a section for “race/ethnicity”. Again, not sure if the governor meets these criteria but well over half the population does. I am sorry to get on my soapbox but we have a treatment for Covid that is very effective if used early and is being grossly underutilized.
Apparently when Greg found out he was COVID-positive he immediately took action for himself.
ICU doctor and NBC News analyst Vin Gupta is urging Texans to “take note” of the actions of Gov. Greg Abbott (R) after he tested positive for the coronavirus on Tuesday.
Abbott has actively thwarted efforts to contain the coronavirus pandemic by banning mask and vaccine mandates.
Yet once he was infected, he was given Regeneron’s monoclonal antibody treatment, despite being fully vaccinated and having no symptoms.
Gupta, a pulmonologist, tweeted:
Quickly getting access to monoclonal antibody therapy when you’re the fully vaccinated, asymptomatic Governor of Texas shows just how anxious and scared @GregAbbott_TX actually is of a virus that he constantly downplays.
Hope Texans take note.

…
NBC News reported on Tuesday that Abbott has told friends he has received a third dose of the vaccine.
…
My bold.
Don’t know if it’s been mentioned yet in this thread that Greg got himself a booster shot.
I really hate this man.
Oh, you ain’t the only one!
Huh. TIL:
There are several Texan TPTB’s worse than Abbott. I’ve been aware of stories of the awfulness of Paxton and Patrick in the past, but worse than Abbott? Well, then! Scumtastic all the way down.
We got a whole thread about it – oh, wait.
He does not.
From the website you linked:
You or your loved one may be eligible for mAb treatment if you meet the following criteria:
- Are an adult or pediatric (≥ 12 years of age and weighing at least ≤ 40 kg) patient
- Have tested positive for COVID-19
- Are experiencing mild or moderate symptoms of COVID-19
- Experienced your first symptoms of COVID-19 in the last 10 days
- Are at high risk for having more serious symptoms of COVID-19 and/or going into the hospital
In addition to being at high risk (half the population), you also need to have symptoms of covid to qualify. Mild or moderate, not for too long.
He was reported to be asymptomatic. He did not qualify for that treatment.
And unless he’s immune compromised he didn’t qualify for a booster shot, either.
??? I didn’t even know he was a Time Lord…
