A governor might mobilize state law enforcement and national guard units to take up positions at commonly used crossing points, and simply turn back illegal entrants, or place them in state holding centers from which they would be returned by air or other conveyance to the countries from which they entered. Equipped with a more robust constitutional mandate, eminent domain could also be used to acquire land at or near the border to erect walls and place other impediments to unauthorized entry. And this shouldn’t be by unilateral gubernatorial action, but done in concert, if at all possible, with the relevant state legislatures. Checkpoints would also have to be established along the lines demarcating borders with states that didn’t join in this effort in order to prevent migrant circumvention. Here COVID precedents could be drawn upon.

I really think Abbott’s goal is to recreate Orval Faubus’ standoff with federal troops on the steps of Little Rock High School. Ironically, he’d have to use the ramp, which wouldn’t be there but for the federal Americans with Disabilities Act.
Greg could hire Jose Andres to handle the program, except for the name “Jose” and the fact that the dude speaks with the same (or at least similar) accent as the undeserving people Greg wants to starve.
Abbott says the only thing he and his henchmen aren’t doing to migrants is shooting them because he “doesn’t want to get charged with murder”. That’s a pretty odd statement for a couple of reasons. First, his little stunt with the razor wire on the floats in the Rio Grande have already gotten people killed. Shooting’s not the only way to commit murder, Guv. And, of course, his statement really leaves a lot of “wiggle room”. So he’s not shooting people, but he’s doing everything else, i suppose? That means rape isn’t off the table. And why would I not be surprised if that happens. To paraphrase a line from, I think it was, *Crucifer of Blood", “His henchmen hate fucking migrants except, oddly enough, when they’re fucking migrants.”
And this is the so-called party of good Christian values?
And now a woman and two children have died because of Greg Abbott’s stunt. They were trying to cross the river and got into trouble near Shelby Park, Mexican authorities alerted the Border Patrol about the situation, but the Texas authorities denied them entrance to the park to try to save the migrants.
But according to no less an authority than Nikki Haley, it was “The Federals” interfering in states’ matters that caused the Civil War. Do you really want to risk that over a few brown people?
As governor Abbott is the “buck stops here” authority in Texas the deaths are his fault then. He needs to face criminal charges. As do the Texas ‘authorities’" who blocked the Feds.
“I was only following orders.” Where have we heard that before?
It’s not your fault, since you were obviously responding to a different post, which you quoted, but seeing this response immediately after the previous post about the drowned migrants, gave me a start as I wondered whether Abbott had joined the Dope.
Can Biden give that money over to Chicago, New York, Denver et al. to help pay for all of the migrants Abbott is sending our way?
I think someone needs to remind him that Texas is no longer an independent republic, despite how he runs the state. No wonder all you Texicans are moving to Colorado.

A federal appeals court Wednesday ruled that Border Patrol agents cannot cut razor wire that Texas installed on the U.S.-Mexico border in the town of Eagle Pass, which has become the center of the state’s aggressive measures to curb migrant crossings.
IIRC, this razor wire has already killed people crossing.
It all becomes moot anyway in a couple of months when Texas and the Feds become entirely simpatico regarding the border. I would not be surprised if we end up deploying anti-personel land mines on the border. (very depressing Quora thread)
