Scum who cheat at online games

Recently I’ve become the proud owner of a brand new copy of Counter-strike: Source. It’s a bloody excellent game, and I love it, especially since the SDMB server was set up. But, because I live on the other side of the planet, I don’t often get to play on that server when there are other people actually on it. So I make do by going onto local Australian servers.

I was playing on the cs_office map… very nice (my favourite map). We were at the bottom of the stairs near the garage door, when a terrorist comes flying down the stairs and shoots the crap out of me. Huh? What? How’d he get down here so fast? The fuxx0r’s got a speed hack. Arsehole!

And how about the c… (can I say it here, it is the pit after all…)… the cunts who have invulnerability hacks? Those pricks who I unload a whole clip into and it doesn’t kill them. Yes, I know sometimes it’s my bad shooting. But when I bring up the console and it says “Damage given: 410” and they’re still alive, there’s something very bloody wrong.

And let’s not forget the cunts (ahhh, that feels so much better) who have auto-aim hacks! Yes! They’re the pricks who can shoot you from the other side of the fucking map with a pistol, score a headshot, and kill you.

Fuck you, fuck you and fuck you some more! You cheating arsehole pigfuckers! What fucking joy do you get from this? “Oooo! I’m 1337! I killed someone without any effort, skill or strategy! I am da pwner! Da rest of you are n00bs who deserve to die!” You fucking cunts, I hate you all.

FUCKERS!!!

Feel free to add your online game cheater rants here.

Max.

Just out of curious, person of l337 speak, why don’t you just go and pick up the hacks? Or are you one of those “principled” gamers who wants to fight the pure fight?

Sam, who has no dog in this fight as he is not a l337 h4xX0r gamer geek.

CS sorta became non-fun for me last weekend when I discovered all the jerks playing with hacks. I thought I just sucked. But then I remembered how good I was at Quake III and I thought, “Gee, I couldn’t suck THAT bad.” Turns out I was right. The very next time I spawned, I went out with a machine gun and an HE. And that was it.

Lobbed the grenade at the hack-using jerk and it went off right next to him. Nothin’. Unloaded most of my machine gun ammo on the guy. Nothin’.

Now I just run my own server. Easier to boot the jerks.

Are you serious?

Completely. Why is that so hard to believe?

I’m truly no good and have no patience for games, so I would be one of those cheaters the OP is complaining about. I like to have fun, and gaming can be so unfun for me. So if I played games I’d use hacks.

Is that so bad?

Reminds me of the first time I ever played Diablo II online. I was a weak and feeble level 1 Druid. Some dude strolls up and drops off a pile of level 50+ magic items and wanders off again. I was like WTF??

Honestly, because I really don’t WANT to. It’s not out of some principle, although I have those too. Playing with cheats just isn’t a whole lotta fun. “Oooh, I killed everyone! What now?”.

These cunts play with cheats because they are, as they say, Teh Suck. Instead of becoming BETTER at the game, they choose a course of action that pisses everyone else off. Fuck them! Fuck them all! I don’t want to be anything like these hack-monkeys.
Max.

So because something isn’t fun for you, you’re going to ruin it for everyone else, right?

In the words of the inimitable Pauline Hanson, “Please explain”.
I have no idea WTF your post means

Max.

Please note I think Pauline Hanson is a xenophobic bigot and her views do not represent mine. Now, back to the gaming-cheat rant

Max.

Yes. It is bad. I don’t know how to cheat and I don’t want to know. I want to play and to improve. When some jerk scores a head shot on you from a long ways away it takes away the fun. It isn’t like there is a penalty for dying in a video game. Also, cheaters are supposed to be reported to Steam and have their accounts closed (works via IP addresses).

If there were severs where everyone was allowed to cheat, then fine they can all go there. You want to have fun, but so do I, and at least some of us aren’t willing to cheat, because it isn’t fun. Now, playing a game with God Mode is quite a bit different than using a speed hack or an aimbot in an on-line game. To be honest, I sometimes do use cheat codes in games to get through a rough spot, but never on-line.

The sad thing is, that I agree with Maxx, our SDMB server does seem to be pretty bad with the cheaters. I would really like some admin rights to the server along with Jayrot and SenorBeef/

Because, based on your other posts here on the SDMB, I thought you’d be just about the last person in the world who would need someone to explain to them why cheating is bad.

If you were playing Poker, would you hide an extra ace up your sleeve because you have more fun when you have a good hand? If you were playing baseball, would you cork your bat because you have more fun when you hit home runs? If you were playing chess, would you try to rearrange your opponents pieces when he wasn’t looking, because you have more fun when you checkmate the other guy?

Just curious, but how would cheating make the game more fun for you? I’ve used cheat codes on single-player games after I’ve already beaten them, just to squeeze that much more replay out of them, but I don’t understand why anyone would even bother to play a game if they’re planning on cheating from the very beginning. It’s like stacking the deck for a game of solitaire. What’s the point?

If you’re playing against other people, then yeah, it is. Games have rules. They generally only work if everyone is playing by the same rules. If one person is playing by his own rules that no one else is following, that makes the game less (or even “no”) fun for everyone else involved. If you cheat in an online, multiplayer game, you’re having your fun at the direct expense of everyone else playing. That sounds pretty dickish to me.

Further, most online games have an end-user liscence agreement that you are required to agree to before you can play. Most of these include explicit clauses forbidding the use of hacks and cheats. I don’t know if CounterStrike has such an EULA, but it seems likely that it does. So anyone using these hacks in that game is in violation of the contract they signed when they installed the game.

I’m not that great at some card games. I don’t suppose you’d mind if the next time you’re playing poker with a bunch of people I join in with a pocket full of aces and kings? I know I’d enjoy it.

Playing games like CS, Halo, Battlefield etc. are much more fun when played online with others. Anyone messing up the game for everyone else with a dumb hack is a stupid :wally

I appreciate the compliment, Miller. I’ve always just looked at video games as well, games. Maybe if I played networked RPGs, I’d feel differently, but I don’t. So, not only will you die-hards not have to worry about me fucking up your game, but I’ll probably never be able to answer the questions of whether or not I would feel it was cheating, per se.

When i play Xbox, I use cheats to get me through a game usually. I do it because I seriously have no talent for video games. Would I do it in a group.RPG situation? I’m not sure, I’ve only ever done it in solo games.

I see your point I guess, but seriously though guys, it’s a game! relax a little.

Never interfere with a gamer and his game…

Sam

This is why I play [url=“www.americasarmy.com”. The game comes with automatic hack detection bundled in (Punkbuster, fyi.) Yes, there are still some hidden hacks, and yes, some people still get away with radarbots, armorbots, and aimbots, but those people are pretty rare.

Another feature I like is the “honor” system. Basically, you start off with 10 honor, and every kill you make or goal you accomplish results in points. When you accumulate a certain number of points (it varies with how experienced you are: honor 10-20, it’s 1000 points. It goes up from there,) you go up an honor level. Higher honor is a good benchmark of experience (“sweet, my team is made up of Honor 80 asskickers!”,) and it allows you to do different things in games (play as Special Forces, play on Elite Servers, etc.)

Conversely, if you shoot your own teammate, BAM, you get anywhere from -10 (for a minor leg wound snap shot) to -350 (for a headshot kill) points (known as ROE, or Rules of Engagement, points.) Instant discipline. If you do so repeatedly, you automatically get booted off the server, get taken to a “Fort Leavenworth” prison sequence, and get -500 ROE points. Low honor restricts the servers you can play on, etc.

One other feature is the easy votekick system. If someone is getting consistent one-shot kills or soaking up damage, just type “votekick USERNAME” to initiate a vote. If he’s pissed off enough people, he’s history. Sometimes it’s misused, but not too often.

There are still some improvements I’d make, but overall, it’s a very well implemented system.

Oh, and did I mention that the game is FREE? It’s a promotional product of the US Army. Just download, update Punkbuster, and go. Really, really good game.

But yeah. Jesus, I hate hackers. They ruin the game for everyone.

Errr, sorry folks. That should be America’s Army.

Sometimes, I’ll use cheats for single player games. I don’t really have gaming skill, and am not hugely interested in acquiring any. My motivation is to see as much of the game as possible. It’s a motivation to explore, more than a motivation to overcome a challenge.

This comes from my tendancy to enjoy “construction” style games more, like SimCity. In these games, I’ll load up the infinite money cheat and build, build, build.

Using cheats in a multiplayer environment strikes me as somewhat unethical. I presume people are playing those games as a competition, and any form of cheating is explicitly attacking these people’s experience.

Bottom line, single player: do whatever the hell you want to have a good time, cheating or no cheating. Multiplayer: cheat, and you’re an asshole.

At the moment Half Life 2 is being ruined by twats who use hacks.

There are anti cheat servers out there, but they never seem to be populated.

The reason Half Life was such a great game and had such a long run, was the existance of the many leagues which proliferated the use of anit cheat and admins banning, which kept the competition interesting.

At the moment, HL2 looks wonderful, and has some lovely touches such as the gravity gun, ut half an hour online playing three people, one of which has an invulnerability cheat on kills the experience.

I’ve watched others playing it, and already they are giving up on the game, I’ve not bought it for this very reason.

If you want to play with cheats on, then you might as well play botmatches and leave the onliners to themselves.

Yeah, I actually wonder why more game companies haven’t gone to outsourcing their anti-hack software. I mean, it’s basically like AdAware for online gamers. Punkbuster (or whatever) scans your .ini file and scans for add-ins. Sure, hackers figure out ways around it, but the nice thing about Punkbuster is that it’s scalable. New hacks? Fine. Just add them in to the hacks PB scans for. Seems to work pretty well.

I got accused of hacking last night in AA. I lucked into finding a major hole in the Assault Team’s lines, blew through it, and came back on the rest of the players from the rear. It was like shooting fish in a barrel. I had 22 kills in 2 games.

Other players started screaming “hack!”, the administrator investigated, cleared me, then begged me to be in his clan.
