I got the #1 pick? Holy diver! I don’t think I’ve ever gotten the #1 in a league I intended to keep track of all the way through.
Wait… now what excuse do I have when I lose?

I agree with you, actually. I was really hoping to pick 1-3, and at worst I thought 7-10 was the second best slot. I didn’t get good results from drafting 11-12 though, and especially not 4-6.
Picking at 1 is a strange thing. I obviously would get my choice of anyone I want to start, and it seems like ADP is the consensus top fantasy player, but I’m not sure if I’ll take him there. I wonder if this happens to everyone who picks at #1? Do they start to suddenly feel suspicious of the clear #1 player?
AP isn’t all that super clear to me, but what the hell do I know. I’m not a fan of the #2 spot and would love to trade down. So, uh, yeah, count me as one vote for “yea” for trading picks.
Beef, when you went in to set the custom draft order, if instead of “Done” you went on to step 2 you can swap any two draft picks. The only requirement is that every player end up with the same amount, meaning if you trade away two picks you must get two picks in return. The draft pick value calculator / chart for fantasy (not NFL) draft picks can be found here. As each trade is approved by the commish, he goes to the draft order and swaps the traded picks. Then during the live draft, everything is handled automatically. It’s really pretty sweet.
Yeah, swapping picks as long as it’s reasonable sounds cool. I’d even be for in-draft trading. As in… person A really wants a player but isn’t sure he’ll drop to him, so he offers the person B, the guy currently drafting, his Nth round pick to swap picks in the current round. They agree. Then person B drafts whoever person A tells him to, and then when person A’s Nth round pick comes around, person B tells him who to draft. And then after the draft I change the rosters to reflect this.
Potential for confusion because we’re on a rigidly timed system, but it could add some interesting possibilities to draft day.
I agree in theory, and there’s nothing wrong with allowing live draft trading. However, it relies on the honor system, and opens up a huge potential for confusion. What if person A is offline for whatever reason and ends up getting an auto-drafted player instead of who person B wanted? (This is a rhetorical; there are many potential problems.)
Even with tons of trading allowed, nobody in the keeper league has ever traded during the live draft. The clock moves a little too fast, IMO.
Pre-draft trading, however, is the bee’s knees.
I’d say we should allow it under the condition that it can be clearly communicated by the time the relevant pick comes up. I think relatively simple ones can work. Someone unexpected drops to #5 overall, so #7 overall says “hey, I’ll give you the #7 and my 9th rounder if you draft player X” - the #5 overall selects player X, the #7 overall selects whoever that player wants, and when the 9th rounder rolls around he picks whoever the guy wants. I can go in and swap the guys on the roster with the commish tools. Obviously he’d be obligated not to disconnect by round 9 - but technical problems may force it. Unlikely, but we’d have to figure something out then.
It probably won’t happen even if we allow it, but I like it in theory.
Predraft trading is cool too (I’m thinking of sending you an offer for the #2 pick), but that probably will only involve the top 10 picks. I doubt anyone’s going to be swapping picks out of the first round since it’s unpredictable who will be available then.
Trading later round picks isn’t necessarily about specific players. For example, tranding down out of the 1st and stockpiling a bunch of 3s and 4s could get you quite a nice bench to change in and out depending on weekly matchup, or maybe you want to package up your 2nd 3rd and 4th to get a second 1st rounder (plus a couple late round fillers) and target a pair of stud RBs. All sorts of strategies are legitimate.
I remember one year Spiritus Mundi did enough trades so that all his picks were in the first 10 rounds. In another one Omni did enough wheeling and dealing so that his draft no longer snaked; he ended up picking at the beginning of every round.
Note that ALL trades really have to send an equal number of picks both ways, so your example would need to include a last round pick or whatever just to keep it even. You can’t exceed the roster limit when swapping players.
Live draft trading is fine by me.
Predraft trades have to match in number of picks. Live draft trades could be uneven - the player receiving multiple players would just have to end up dropping someone.
We’ve been sitting at 10/12 re-upped for a while. How long should we wait for Jimmy Chitwood and BrianJedi? Really, it’s only August 8th so it’s pretty early yet. Both players have been with the league for 4 years, although (based on trades/free agent pickups/waiver claims/etc, discussion) not very active.
I’m just tempted to have everything complete and ready to go so we can start discussing any potential pre-draft trades. Omniscient and Boozahol Squid, PI have both expressed interest in the league and I know them to both be good, active players.
I probably shouldn’t even be thinking of this in the 2nd week of august - I’ve been rushing to have everything set up and done for fantasy season as if it would somehow usher in the football season early.
It’s actually getting kinda late. You want several weeks for offseason trading so that everyone has a realistic chance to negotiate with everyone they want. I’d recommend we get the league filled up, determine the draft order and open offseason trading by Monday.
Alright. I’ll send out extra PMs (in case I forgot to include their names on the list the first time) and another e-mail invite.
Time to review our league scoring.
The settings can be seen here.
I formatted this list with a slash that seperates our value with the yahoo default value. If only one number is listed, it means we’re using the default value.

I think our scoring system worked really well, and only could use minor tweaking.
I’d like to move the sack penalty up to -.5 or -.6 points (from .33), to better reflect the actual lost yardage involved on the average sack and to benefit QBs that take fewer sacks.
I’d like to open discussion on raising the PPR value to perhaps .4 or .5 - I don’t feel strongly for it and I can’t even really make a case for it, but it would even out the value between WRs and RBs a bit more I suppose.
I’d like to raise the idea of perhaps 20 return yards per point to make multirole players viable fringe starters.
I’m thinking we may want to reduce our kicker scoring slightly. I’d rather attack this from the penalty end rather than the scoring end - perhaps instead of:
Field Goals Missed 0-19 Yards -3 / 0
Field Goals Missed 20-29 Yards -2 / 0
Field Goals Missed 30-39 Yards -1 / 0
we’d use -4, -3, -2. Or we could even use fractions. -4, -2.5, -1.5 perhaps.
I’d like to make safeties worth more than 2 points. It’s a scoring play, it’s pretty rare, and it requires a substantial defensive effort so I think it should be worth more than a fumble recovery, interception, or 2 sacks. I think it’s only 2 because FF naturally tends to gravitate towards making scoring plays worth their actual number of points (ie touchdowns 6, 2 point conversion 2) but I think it would be more appropriate to give it a score of 3 or even 4.
I wouldn’t mind tweaking the defense to reward a good performance and punish a bad performance slightly more. Perhaps instead of
Points Allowed 0 points 15 / 10
Points Allowed 1-6 points 10 / 7
Points Allowed 7-13 points 6 / 4
Points Allowed 14-20 points 3 / 1
Points Allowed 21-27 points 0
Points Allowed 28-34 points -5 / -1
Points Allowed 35+ points -10 / -4
We could have
0 = 16
1-6=11
7-13=7
14-20=3
21-27= -1
28-34 -6
35+= -11
I’m open to ideas.
I’m fond of the keeper league defensive settings, posted here.
I gave Jimmy Chitwood’s spot to Omniscient. I’m reluctant to give up anyone’s slot since we’ve had the same core group for a year years now, but I did send out the first invites probably about three weeks ago, I’ve sent him another e-mail and 2 IMs since then. He stopped posting abruptly on July 27, so I hope nothing bad happened to him, but I think we’ve given a reasonable amount of time for him to sign up.
I wanted to have the league filled and set up now, so we can start trading draft picks.
So, draft pick trading is now open. Omni will get Chitwood’s #6 spot. If you want to conduct negotiations or put picks on the market in this thread, great. If you’d prefer to discuss it privately, feel free to use the league e-mail system (if anyone objects to receiving this sort of e-mail please post about it) or board PM system.
The only requirements are that each player ends up with the number of picks that you started with. So if you want to trade 2 picks to move up, the other guy will have to throw in a late rounder just to make it work. I suppose you could work out funky 3 way trades so long as everyone ends up with an even number of picks.
My #4 pick is definitely up for sale, by the way. I’d rather pick either top 3, or bottom 4. So if you want to make an offer, by all means. I’ll probably be sending out some offers of my own, as my FF research gets done and I have a better idea of where exactly I want to draft.
Do we want to consider using the yahoo division’s feature? It was pointed out in the general discussion thread that with a 12 team league you can have a very elegant division/schedule system of 3 divisions of 4 players, you play everyone in your division twice and everyone else in the league once.
Additionally, you can set it up so that the three division winners get a playoff spot, and with a 4 team playoffs, the last slot goes to a wild card. But we’ve used a 6 team playoff, and I’m not eager to change that, so we could do 3 winners + 3 wildcards I suppose. There’s an option to seed division winners as the highest seeds so that could be some benefit to winning divisions.
I’m not sure I’d care for that in this league’s system, or how we’d set up the divisions. Just throwing it out there for discussion.
I’m drafting eighth this year…hmmm. A real challenge, so that I can prove that I am a ‘real owner’. ToeJAMmers, this year you will indeed hold the first place trophy long enough to polish it up, and hand it to me so I can place it on my mantle.

One week till the draft. Woo!
Can I get some feedback on our league scoring posted about in post #32?
If no one discusses it, I either change it to my preferences and look like I’m a unilateral arbitrary commish, or I don’t change it and we never have any refinement of our system.
To summarize the proposals I have for scoring changes:
Does anyone support those changes? Object to those changes? Alternate suggestions?
I don’t like this. I understand why there is negative scoring, but don’t see a need to increase the negatives.
This I like. WRs need some love too.
Prefer lower score.
See (1)
I’d like a safety to be 1 point more than (7), wherever that ends up
No strong feelings either way, but leaning slightly towards our old scoring.
Same as (6), but note what I said in (5)
