SDMB Auction Fantasy Football 2012

Last year’s thread

We are not yet recruiting - everyone has a chance to take your slot from last year. If you want to keep track of recruiting leagues, go to the general FF discussion thread.

The draft is currently set for Tuesday, Aug 28 at 9:45 Eastern. This date is still available to be changed if there’s a problem with it.

I plan on using the sunday through tuesday waiver system for free agents that we used last year. Yahoo automatically puts all players on waivers as of 1pm Sunday, so you can submit a claim rather than having the person closest to the computer pick them up as free agents. We’ve done this for a while now. Yahoo now allows us to have players go on waivers at the start of their game, rather than at a fixed date of Sunday at 1pm, so we don’t need special rules for Thursday and Saturday games.

I also plan on doing the FAAB waiver system where you start with 100 to bid on players plus whatever leftover money you had from the draft.

I’m also going to keep the commissioner approval on trades for all the reasons I outlined last year. I will automatically and quickly approve any reasonable trade. If there’s something fishy about a trade we’ll discuss it, but there’s no real chance of a trade being rejected in this league - we’re all serious players, no one will say “fuck it” and throw their season, we all know enough not to get ripped off, and as we’ve proved, people tend not to want to rock the boat and vote against trades anyway.

Practically, this means you have later in the week to work out trades. Previously if you worked out a trade on friday evening, that trade wouldn’t go through by the time Sunday’s games started, so you’d be screwed if someone got hurt late in the week or if you just didn’t have time to conduct the negotiations. Now you can make trades up until Sunday morning and still get them through before the game starts.

I’m usually around early Sunday mornings to push trades through, but if you make a very late trade on Saturday night or Sunday morning, I may not be able to approve it in time. If that happens, both of you should make your intent clear “I plan on starting player X I just traded for in place of player Y” and I can retroactively make the rosters reflect that.

If there are any problems with these policies, feel free to voice them and we’ll discuss it.

Just as in the big league, is it possible to have an earlier draft time? I have to leave for work at 1130 Eastern time to make it to my overnight shift on time.

I cannot make an earlier start time on Tuesdays. In general - Sundays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays are open for any start time.

One thing I will do starting this year is I will post the length of the draft for each league I’m in. That should hopefully make schedule planning a bit easier for subsequent years.

Just FYI, I’m not sure yet whether I’ll be back for the league again this year. Last season I stretched myself WAY too thin with 6 FF leagues, and my performance and interest suffered in all of them.

So, this year, I’m scaling back to at most four, and probably three, and two of those are already spoken for (Dynasty League commish, and HHM Keeper League member for like 8 or 9 years and a former champion). So I’m gonna have to decide which of my other leagues to return to, and I’m not sure yet. I won’t be too long in deciding so there’ll be plenty of time to fill spots.

Is moving it 1 day to Wednesday the 29th a problem? I actually have sort of plans that day but I think they can be moved.

If not, it’s more important to make the beginning of the draft rather than the end, if we had to choose. If you’re there at the beginning, you won’t lose out on high value players, and you could always buy up a roster at a faster than usual pace if you need to leave the draft early. Not ideal, but not nearly as critical as showing up late and missing out on a chance at the top 25 players or whatever.

It’s a tough call but I tend to think of this one as the toughest, so I’d probably go with this one. But a case could be made for the big league being as different as it is - it can be engaging because it requires a different strategy than typical. You should definitely join at least one though.

I can easily make the first part of the draft. However, I’m going to scout around for a place near my work that has wi fi, so I can just draft from there and head to work. There are a couple of large hotels nearby. That would allow me to draft up until midnight Eastern.

Signups missing now are Varlos, Hamlet, and Jules Andre. I know Varlos is deciding what leagues to join but he’s going to have to decide soon - haven’t heard from the other two. It’s august so I’m really going to need to crack down on this before there’s no one left to recruit if we need to find replacements.

Speaking of which, I forgot about our timing issue. Have you figured out a solution, Dale?

Otherwise, would anyone be unable to make it if we bumped the draft up one day to that Wednesday?

Sorry about the delay in my response. Not a lot of time around these parts.

I’m in the same boat with Varlos. I don’t have much time for fantasy this year, and I know I’ll have to give up several leagues. I’d like to keep this one, but I won’t be able to make the draft unless it’s held on a Wednesday or Sunday night. It isn’t worth trying to play an auction league that you can’t draft in, though.

Alright, given that it would help two people, I’m okay with moving the draft day one spot up to Wednesday, Aug 29 at 9:45PM eastern. Does that work for you two? Is there anyone who can’t make that new draft date?

I just checked yahoo. A lot of the prime time draft slots for that Wednesday are gone. Closest times I can get are 7:15 eastern and 10:30 eastern. Later usually works better for people, but is 10:30 eastern too late? I’m going to send out a mass e-mail/PM To check with people on that.

It does not make much difference to me, so I will leave it up to the group.

I’m in for whenever.

Wednesday at 10:30 is fine for me.

ok with me

I’m fine with anything. I’d prefer later in the evening to earlier.

Since I’m in the UK I’d prefer an early evening - 7:15 eastern is perfect - but I’ll try to be flexible.

Hmm, I thought Dale said he could make the draft later on Wednesday, but looking back in the thread, there’s nowhere he said that. Either I got that from some sort of private communication or he never said it and I’m getting him mixed up with someone. If I am, Dale can’t make 10:30 on Wednesday since he already said it’ll be hard for him to make the normal 9:45 time - or at least complete it.

On the other hand, in an auction draft you always have the chance to blow your money early and still shape your team.

Anyway, I’ll wait to hear from him - I may have screwed up by suggesting that Wednesday at 10:30 works for everyone.

Maybe Wednesday at 7:15 eastern? Considering it’s 4:15 on the west coast, I’m guessing that’s too early for some people, but I figured I’d ask.
