I’m 100 percent in favor of that. I could care less how we organize as far as divisions go, I’ll play under any structure.
OK, having cooled down a little since the other day, i will do the same. I still don’t really like the proposal under consideration, but i’ve already said that i’m only playing for fun, so what do i care if i’m in the losers’ division?
Of course, the type of people who gloat when they win are also often the type of people who make excuses when they lose. If we change the arrangement, and someone from the losers’ division happens to win it all, i’m betting that the next step will be a few people in the winners’ division complaining about how that person had such an easy schedule, and how they didn’t really deserve to win.
They could always take the novel tack of blaming Jesus when they lose.
I guess another way to organize divisions is time spent in the league, but that won’t line up neatly. I was just trying to come with some justification to organize them - something logical and elegant - otherwise I’d prefer to throw them out as basically meaningless.
I wasn’t able to move the draft back to the previous time - everything after 2pm or so is booked up solid.
Can i ask what it is about my own proposal that apparently fails your “logical and elegant” test?
It organizes divisions based on past performance, which is exactly what you wanted to do. It also has the advantage of evening out the strength of schedule, so that everyone plays about the same number of good, average, and poor teams.
Admittedly, you could arrive at a similar result by eliminating divisions altogether and simply ensuring that each team has a roughly similar schedule. But, in the absence of actual physical factors like travel distance, which was part of the rationale for divisions in real sports, it seems to me that an equal-strength-of-schedule division system is at least as logical and elegant as any other.
Your proposal is essentially to homogenizes the league in a way that renders divisions pointless, so I sort of count it as support as just elimination divisions.
I am fine either way and I really see nothing wrong with the divisions. Of course, I am one of the few people in a division that has legitimate identity (GO GIANTS!). To be honest, I am having a hard time figuring out why anyone really cares about divisions vs none. Looking back, no one really got screwed over because of divisions. Points vs. Head-to-head I can understand, but the divisions are a nice way to organize a 20-team league.
What was our waiver policy on Weds or Thurs games? No picking them up until they come out of weekend waivers?
Also, after the draft, it looks like players go on waivers for 2 days. Theoretically I’d suggest that was a fine waiver period for the players on the dallas vs giants wednesday game, but on further thought, that might cause confusion since that information would have to go out to 20 people for a one time exception.
whoops, read in the OP that Yahoo will take care of all this stuff, so nevermind.
I’m trying to figure out the new divisions and new team names but I’m missing something.
The vets division is intact - Exploding Pancakes (SenorBeef), Scissor Me Timbers (munch), Curry Porkrinds (tds1273), Return of Ryan Leaf (mhendo), Phoenix Redbirds (dalej42)
The old semi-newbies lost 2 people, Hamlet and Brute Squad (Only Mostly Dead), leaving up by three (Taber), Evil Monkey (MTRG), unrelated siblings (uncle brother walker)
Newbies lost Hey There Fancypants (MrSquishy), leaving Not Sure (brickbacon), Garcon’s Cedilia (friend of MrSquishy), CMFD (now Overly Sentimental), Living Through Them (Gray Ghost)
Giants division lost The Gusterhoids (Justin Bailey) and Varlos, leaving Court Jesters (d_odds), frosted lightning (Frosted Glass), and No Use For A Name II (Retrovertigo)
New entrants are 9 inch neils (RNATB), The Fleas (Wilson), Cobra Kai (Boozahol Squid, PI), Rough and Tumblrs (Enalzi), Red Hoculi Peppers (Darth Sensitive)
In previous years we’ve only had little turnover and just plugged people in as replacements in the divisions but we’ve had 5 changes this year, which mixes things up. Having a Giants Fan division losing 2 eliminates the original (and arbitrary) purpose, so it’ll be sort of weird to keep it.
Let me try organizing it a few ways and see if anything becomes elegant.
Okay, with 5 new people it makes some sense to put them in their own division. So then I looked at how long people have been in the league. We’ve got 8 who’ve been here all 3 years, and 7 more who’ve been in for 2. So I figured we could redo divisions based on time in the league - but necesarily one division would have to have 3 third year players and 2 second year players. So I needed some way to break the tie to sort it, so I used average finish as a tiebreaker, but time spent in the league is the primary criteria.
All in all, it seems elegant enough. Not perfect, but enough people had left that plugging them in to the old structure would’ve been a fudging on top of a fudging.
Division 1 - all three year players
Exploding Pancakes (SenorBeef)
Scissor Me Timbers (Munch)
No Use For A Name II (RetroVertigo)
Frosted Lightning (Frosted Glass)
Curry Porkrinds (tds1273)
Division 2 - 3 three year players, 2 two year
Court Jesters (d_odds), 3 year
Unrelated Siblings (uncle brother walker), 3 year
Phoenix Redbirds (dalej42), 3 year
Up By Three (Taber), 2 year
Not Sure (brickbacon), 2 year
Division 3 - remaining 2 year players
Garcon’s Cedillia (friend of MrSquishy)
Evil Monkey (MTRG)
Overly Sentimental formerly CMFD - (Overly Sentimental/Chuck)
Living Through Them - formerly Sizzurp Sippers (Gray Ghost)
Return of Ryan Leaf (mhendo)
Division 4 - new this year
Cobra Kai (Boozahol Squid, PI) - actually was with us in year 1, so has 1 year experience
9 Inch Neils (Really Not All That Bright)
The Fleas (Wilson)
Rough and Tumblrs (Enalzi)
Red Hoculi Peppers (Darth Sensitive)
Since we were going to have a really hard time finding any sort of logical geographic/fan based solution, this seems like a reasonably elegant way to come up with something somewhat meaningful. I like the result. Any comments?
The divisions are fine with me
It doesn’t really matter to me one way or the other.
In my irl leagues we have always divided up divisions according to draft order. Even and odd numbers split. But like I said it doesn’t matter to me, even if we eliminate them completely.
looks good to me…
Works for me.
Fine with me as well. I do suggest that this could possibly get a little old going forward - though I do like the idea of developing rivalries. But maybe a different conceit each year? Dunno - plenty of time to talk about it.
That works for me.
Draft is tomorrow. We’ve been using voice chat for our other drafts to make them more interesting. You don’t need a microphone - if you don’t have one you can listen in and respond in text.
Instructions:
Sounds good. I’ll definitely give the voice thing a try. See you all tomorrow evening.
One quick q: If I drop a player, do I get the money back that I spent on him? Or is it just gone for good?
